Manitowoc, WI – July 10, 2009 – Manitowoc, WI – July 10, 2009 – Warm temperatures and rain in the forecast didn’t keep the race fans home for the Pat Rand Memorial Mid Season Championship at Manitowoc County Expo Speedway. The race night was sponsored by Gandrud Auto Group, Green Bay, and the trophy sponsor was Action Auto, Green Bay.

Tim Haddy (Waupun) captured his first EWSC Sprint Car A-Main victory while Russ Scheffler (Pewaukee) took home his 6th EWSC Late Model win. Jason Winkler (New Holstein) claimed his first Grand National feature win and Matt McDonald (Manitowoc) took home his second Hobby Stock feature trophy.

Lance Fassbender (Burnett) took control of the first 25 lap MSA presented by Image 1 Motorsports Sprint Car A-Main from his outside front row starting position. The first caution of the race came on lap 15 for the car of Fassbender stopping in turn one with a flat tire and the car of Kurt Davis (Milwaukee) stopping in turn two. With Fassbender going to the pits, Haddy was handed the lead. Haddy paced the field to the green only to be slowed for the last time of the race for the car of Joe Wipperfurth (Columbus) stalling in turn two. Haddy took the green and on the final lap, Wayne Modjeski (Oak Creek) passed him for the win. Crossing behind Modjeski was Haddy, TJ Luedke (Plymouth), Fassbender, and Shane Wenninger (Kewaskum).

After inverting all the cars on the lead lap, Scott Mohs (Sheboygan Falls) got a great start for the second 25 lap MSA Sprint Car A-Main. Wipperfurth took the reigns from Mohs on lap 4. The race was slowed on lap 7 for the cars of Jeremy Schultz (Beaver Dam) spinning in turn three and Kevin Karnitz (West Bend) tagging the guardrail in turn two. Fassbender was on a mission. Starting 11th, he was chasing Wipperfurth for control of the race. When the cars came around to be scored for lap 8, Fassbender was leading. Terry Marten (Sheboygan Falls) was chasing the leaders and on lap 8 was scored in third. The yellow flag came out once again on lap 10 for the ride of Josh Walter (Plymouth) stopping in the pit chute but not clear of the track. Another car on a mission, after finishing second in the first segment was Haddy who started 13th and passed Marten on lap 12 for second. Fassbender was flying around the track putting several cars between himself and Haddy on lap 16. Brian Kristan (Zion, IL) was also making his way to the front from his 22nd place starting position, after making the show through the B-Main. He was scored 7th on lap 17. Fassbender showed the way to the checkers followed by Haddy, Wipperfurth, Wenninger and Kristan.

After tallying up the averages from the final finishes of both segments, the overall winner of the Sprint Car A-Main was Haddy. Rounding out the top five were Wenninger, Modjeski, Luedke and Wipperfuth. Fassbender was disqualified for mechanical issues and was scored in 22nd place for the second segment. A big thank you goes out to all the sponsors that threw in the extra purse money and prizes for the Sprint Twin 25 A-Mains.

The Sprint Car B-Main got off to a slow start. Before a lap was complete, the red flag was waved for the car of Randy Call (Milwaukee) flipping between turns 3 and 4. Call was fine but retired his winged warrior to the pits for the remainder of the night. On the restart, Kristan took the lead followed by Walter. Kristan and the rest of the field were slowed on lap 4 for the car of Russ Wetenkamp (Newton) spinning in turn 4. On the restart, Marten passed Walter for second and was chasing down Kristan. Kristan had his car hooked up and was running the top groove of the track giving the fans a great show. Kristan took home the checkers followed by Marten, Scott Conger (Eagle), Karnitz and Walter.

The 25 lap Late Model feature was the only feature race that was caution less. Jeff Sayler (Howards Grove) took the lead from his outside front row starting position. Sayler’s lead was short lived when on lap 3 Robert Cullen (Chilton) passed him for the lead. Craig Schueffner (Sheboygan Falls) passed Sayler for second and was chasing Cullen. Making his way to the front from his tenth place starting position was Russ Scheffler (Pewaukee). On lap 8, Scheffler passed Schueffner for second. On lap 16, Scheffler made his move and passed Cullen for the lead. Scheffler took home his 6th EWSC Late Model Trophy for 2009. Chasing Scheffler to the line was Cullen, Randy Markwardt (Sheboygan), Gordie Seegert, and Scheffner.

The 20 lap Krajnik Chevrolet Grand National feature was shortened by the time limit. Bob Peter (Howards Grove) took the lead from the pole. The race was slowed on lap 3 for the car of Chad Ninmer (Cleveland) spinning and collecting several other cars. After one more completed lap the race was slowed again for the car of Kevin Damrow (Whitelaw) spinning in turn 2. The race got back underway for another 3 laps and was once again slowed for the ride of Chris Baumann (Elkhart Lake) spinning in turn four. When the field came across the line to be scored, Jason Winkler had passed Peter for first. With the time limit nearing, the race was resumed but the yellow flag came out on lap 11 for the car of Kevin Lubach (Elkhart Lake) and Donald Schumacher (Oconomowoc) getting together in turn 1. With the time limit now expired, the race went green, white, checkered. On the final lap, the cars of Daniel Schumacher (Milwaukee) and Ben Stumpf (Brillion) got together. Winkler won the race followed by Peter, Matt Yancey (Sheboygan), Jestin Danes, and Brian Gilles (Plymouth).

Tim Simon (Fond du Lac) took control of the Hobby Stock feature from the pole. Ryan Minster (Sheboygan) jumped into second from his seventh place starting position. Matt McDonald (Manitowoc) was making a charge to the front and on lap 5 was right behind Minster. The race was slowed on lap 5 for debris on the track. When the field came around on the next lap, McDonald passed Minster for second and now had his sights on Simon. On lap 13, McDonald passed Simon for the lead and took home the trophy. Following McDonald to the checkers was Bradley Ruh (Elkhart Lake), Simon, Adam Krepline (Manitowoc) and Jeff Leonhard (Sheboygan).
