Manitowoc, WI – May 29, 2009 – The ghosts and goblins were out at the racetrack as EWSC celebrated Halloween in May.  The night of racing was sponsored by S & R Bar and Restaurant of Plymouth and Affordable Auto Rental, Sheboygan.

Pole sitter, Paul Pokorski (West Bend), led the field to the green flag 3 times before the 30 lap 360 Sprint Car A-Main actually got started. The yellow flag came out before the first circuit was complete for the car of Jeremy Schultz (Beaver Dam) spinning in turn 2. Pokorski lined back up on the pole with Tim Haddy (Waupun) next to him to attempt to get the race started. Once again before the first circuit was complete, the red flag came out for the flipping car of Tony Wondra (Campbellsport) getting together with the ride of Jeff Wilke (Genoa, IL). Both drivers would check out fine but they both retired to the pits for the remainder of the night. At the drop of the green flag, Pokorski jumped out to the lead only to be slowed once again on lap 4 for the car of Derek Siegel (St. Francis) spinning in turn 4. Pokorski led the field to the green and on lap 9 was weaving his winged warrior through lapped traffic. The yellow came out on lap 15 for Siegel who lost the handle on his ride. At this point, Siegel was sent to the pits due to the 2 spin rule. On the restart, Pokorski had put 3 lapped cars between himself and second place running TJ Luedke (Plymouth). By this time, it was evident that Pokorski was on a mission as he extended his lead and continued to put cars laps down. Luedke and Wayne Modjeski (Oak Creek) ran out of laps to try to catch Pokorski and finished behind Pokorski respectively. Rounding out the top five were Lance Fassbender (Burnett) and Haddy.

Tom Naeyaert (Shawano) and Robert Cullen (Chilton) led the pack for the 25 lap Late Model feature. Cullen grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag until lap 5 when Naeyaert took over. Naeyaert’s lead was short lived and on the next complete circuit Russ Scheffler (Pewaukee) took control of the race. The yellow flag flew on lap 7 for the car of Jeff Sayler (Howards Grove) spinning. On the restart, the yellow came back out for Eric Michaels (Cleveland) spinning on the front stretch. Rick Scheffler (Oconomowoc) kept his sites on his brother and patiently made his way to be scored in second on lap 8 and was in pursuit to catch Russ. Russ started lapping cars on lap 14 and continued his pace to the checkers. Crossing behind Russ and Rick were Tim Buhler (Glenbeulah), Naeyaert, and Ron Berna (Abrams).

The 20 lap Grand National feature was slow to get started as the cars of Jerry Brickner (Mishicot) and Jason Winkler (Sheboygan) got together prior to the first lap being completed. Brickner’s car was not able to continue and was taken off the track on the hook. Bob Peter (Howards Grove) jumped out to the lead until lap 4. Brian Gilles (Plymouth) crossed the line first to be scored in front of Peter. Half way through the race, Winkler, who lined up shotgun, was running seventh and chasing Gilles and Peter. Gilles and the field were slowed on lap 11 for the car of Scott Houpt (Belgium) losing power on the track. The yellow flag came out again on lap 13 for the car of Brian Rathe (Kewaunee) stopping in turn 4. Only completing one lap, the field was slowed for the car of Ben Stumpf (Brillion) also stopping in turn 4. As the laps were winding down, Chad Ninmer (Cleveland) brought out the caution by spinning in turn 2. Gilles led the rest of the way to take home his second feature win of the year. Rounding out the top 5 was Matt Jackson (Sheboygan), Winkler, Peter, Daniel Schumacher (Milwaukee).

Kevin Damrow (Whitelaw) lined up on the outside of the front row for the 15 lap Hobby Stock feature and took the early lead. Ryan Minster (Sheboygan) took the lead away from Damrow on lap 6. On lap 8, Adam Krepline (Manitowoc) took control and led the rest of the way in the caution free race. Chasing Krepline to the finish was Bradley Ruh (Elkhart Lake), Matt McDonald (Manitowoc), Jeff Leonhard (Sheboygan) and Minster. Join EWSC next Friday, June 5th, for our full race program. Kids, bring your big wheels along as there will be big wheel races down the front stretch at intermission. Racing starts at 7:00 following a progressive format.
