Manitowoc, WI – May 22, 2009 – After finishing second in his heat, Russ Scheffler of Pewaukee had the lucky horseshoe in his pocket for the roll for the invert. Scheffler started on the pole of the 25 lap Late Model feature and jumped out in front to take the lead. The yellow flag came out on laps 6 and 9 for cars getting together. As Scheffler was extending his lead, the fight for 2nd was heating up. Craig Schueffner of Sheboygan Falls and Oconomowoc’s Rich Scheffler were running side by side and exchanging spots as they crossed the line for several laps as they were trying to run Russ Scheffler down. Rick Scheffler and Schueffner ran out of laps and crossed the line respectively behind Russ Scheffler. Rounding out the top 5 were Bob Cullen of Chilton, who had to make the show through the B-Main, and Greenfield’s Jayme Zidar.
Tony Wondra of Campbellsport had his ride hooked for the 360 Sprint Car 30 lap A-Main. Wondra started on the outside of the front row and took control of the race from the drop of the green flag. The field was slowed on lap 12 for the car of Mukwonago’s Mark Wernes, Jr. stopping on the track. Wondra lined up in the front for the restart only to be slowed again on lap 16 for the car of Brian Portschy of Plymouth having mechanical problems. Not even getting another lap in, the field was stopped for the car of Plymouth’s Ben Schmidt having problems in turn 4. The last caution of the race came on lap 24 for the car of Jeff Wilke of Genoa, IL spinning. On the restart, Beaver Dam’s Jeremy Schultz, who started eighteenth and making the show through the B-Main, got a great start and found himself in contention for 6th place. Driving hard, Schultz passed a few more cars to finish in the top 5. Chasing Wondra to the line was Lance Fassbender of Burnett, West Bend’s Paul Pokorski, Schultz, and Shane Wenninger of Kewauskum.
Scott Houpt of Belgium started fourth in the 20 lap Grand National feature and after the first circuit was setting the pace for the flag to flag race. Plymouth’s Brian Gilles started tenth and by lap 6 was in fourth chasing down Houpt. Houpt’s lead was too much for Gilles and the rest of the pack. Crossing behind Houpt were Jason Winkler of New Holstein, Sheboygan’s Matt Jackson, Gilles, and 17 year old Ben Stumpf of Brillion.
In the 15 lap Hobby Stock feature, Manitowoc’s Matt McDonald took the lead at the drop of the green flag. Weaving his way through traffic to get to the front, Adam Krepline of Manitowoc took the lead away from McDonald on lap 6. The only caution of the race came on lap 9 for the car of Ryan Minster of Sheboygan spinning in turn 4. Rounding out the top 5 behind Krepline were Elkhart Lake’s Bradley Ruh, McDonald, Kevin Damrow of Whitelaw, and Sheboygan’s Jeff Leonhard.
