by Sheila Leamer
Manitowoc, WI – August 8, 2008 – With school right around the corner, EWSC helped the kids get ready to go back by giving them back to school items.  The night was also in remembrance of Happy Laack.  Happy was one of the “founding fathers” of EWSC back in 1961 and was an active member of the club until he passed away.

Due to some lengthy repairs that needed to be done to the backstretch guardrail from an incident that happened during one of the Grand National heat races, the feature races were shortened.

Tim Haddy of Waupun jumped out to the lead of the 20 lap 360 Sprint Car A-Main. The field was slowed on lap 5 for the car of Plymouth’s TJ Luedke spinning out. Haddy led the field to the green and was in control of the race for one more circuit. Rookie Jeremy Schultz of Beaver Dam passed Haddy on lap 7. On lap 8, the pack was stopped for the flipping car of Sussex’s Danny Schlafer, who made the show by starting in the back of the B-Main, due to having mechanical problems in his heat and having to get his back up car out of the hauler. While Haddy and Schultz were racing for the lead, heat winner, Lance Fassbender of Burnett was on the prowl. Charging from his 8th place starting position, Fassbender passed Haddy for second on lap 9 and on lap 10 crossed the line in from of Schultz to be scored as the leader. The race was slowed again on lap 17 for the ride of West Bend’s Paul Pokorski making slight contact with the guardrail in turn 2 and not being able to make it into the pits. This set up a green, green, white, checkered finish. While Fassbender was out in front, Haddy and Schultz were competing for the runner up spot. Haddy passed Schultz on the final lap for second and third respectively. Rounding out the top five was Al Schlafer of Sussex and Troy Center’s Pete Ostrowski. This was Fassbender’s fourth A-Main win at Manitowoc County Expo Speedway.

The Late Model feature was in memory of Happy Laack. The race was projected to go 35 laps but was shortened to 30 laps. Rick Scheffler of Waukesha took the lead from the pole and continued to pace the way until lap 9. Franklin’s Dan Sorce passed Scheffler for the lead and continued to lead until lap 17. Scheffler fought back and took the lead back on lap 18. The caution flag was waved on lap 19 for the car of Ralph Aschenbrenner of Oneida. Meanwhile, Shawano’s Tom Naeyaert had one goal in mind and would not settle for anything less than that goal. Naeyaert passed Scheffler on lap 26. The yellow flag flew on lap 27 for the cars of Russ Scheffler of Waukesha, Franklin’s Al Atkinson, Craig Schueffner and Tim Carman, both of Sheboygan getting together. Chasing Naeyaert to the checkers was Scheffler, Marshfield’s Chris Oertel, Ron Berna from Green Bay and Oneida’s Ralph Aschenbrenner. Naeyaert took home the extra $100 purse money donated by Baleigh Industrial of Manitowoc. The Cher-Make “Hot Dog” Hard Charger was from the Late Model division and Glenbeulah’s Howie Weiss was the recipient for passing 7 cars.

New Holstein’s Chad Kisnter took the lead of the 18 lap Grand National feature. The pack was slowed after the first circuit for the car of Brian Rathe of Kewaunee. Plymouth’s Brian Gilles was making his way to the front and on lap 10 took the bragging rights away from Kistner. The yellow flag flew one more time for the car of Mike Bastian of Manitowoc. Gilles paced the field back to the green and after a few more laps, to the checkers. Following Gilles to the line was Cascade’s Mark Fieber, Matt Jackson of Sheboygan Jason Winkler and Chad Kistner both of New Holstein. Gilles has now claimed 6 Grand National feature wins in Manitowoc.

In the 12 lap Hobby Stock feature, Josh McDonald found himself in the lead at the drop of the green flag. Brett Koehler had his sites on McDonald and on lap 6 passed for the lead. Koehler took home the win followed by Manitowoc’s Adam Krepline, McDonald, Mike Kaufmann of Newton, and Manitowoc’s Josh Schroeder.

The 12 lap Mighty 4 feature saw Greg Gierke of Kiel take the lead. On lap 3, Plymouth’s Amber Rabe passed Gierke and led until mechanical problems forced her to the pits on lap 6. This handed Kyle Resch of Manitowoc the lead. Mishicot’s Matt Cherney made a last lap pass on Resch to take home the checkered flag. Crossing the line after Cherney and Resch was Gierke, Jody Cornelius of Oneida, and Michael Schultz of Sheboygan Falls.

Racing continues next Friday, August 15th with Food Pantry Night. All fans are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to be given to the Food Pantry. The 2008 EWSC yearbooks are on sale for $4.00. Get yours and stop in the pits after the races and get your favorite drivers autograph.
