Manitowoc, WI – July 25, 2008 –Even though there was no snow in the forecast, EWSC celebrated Christmas in July with prizes given to the fans. Bank First National sponsored a nickel drop for kids with special coins mixed in redeemable for savings bonds. Holiday House of Manitowoc also enjoyed a night at the races. With a fast track, the fans at the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway were treated to some great racing action.

The 360 Sprint Car 30 lap A-Main got off to a heart pounding start.  Pole sitter, Al Schlafer of Sussex, jumped into the lead but the field was quickly halted for the flipping car of Beaver Dam’s Jeremy Schultz, who was not injured.  After the track was cleared and the field was reset, Schlafer paced the pack to the green only to be stopped before getting a lap in for the ride of his son, Danny Schlafer of Sussex, flipping over the guardrail in turn 2 after getting together with Oak Creek’s Wayne Modjeski.  Both drivers were uninjured.  Schlafer once again paced the field for another circuit before the red flew again for a huge mishap that started on the front stretch when the car of Jack Parrish got into Ben Schmidt of Plymouth sending both cars spinning in turn 1 and several other cars getting together.  After a lengthy red to get the debris cleaned up, 5 cars would be retired to the pits for the rest of the night following that incident.  With hopes of getting some racing in, Schlafer took the green followed by Sheboygan Falls’ Terry Marten. Heat winner, Paul Pokorski of West Bend had his winged warrior hooked up and after starting 11th and avoiding the prior incident was in 3rd when they crossed the line on lap 3.  Pokorski passed Marten on lap 7 and now was in hot pursuit of Schlafer who was a half of a straight ahead. While Schlafer and Pokorski were patiently weaving their way through lapped traffic by lap 18, Troy Center’s Pete Ostrowski, who qualified for the show through the B-Main, (starting 18th), Michael Emme of Manitowoc(starting 9th), and Plymouth’s Travis Luedke (starting 13th) put their cars in high gear and charged their way to the front.  With Pokorski still having his sights on Schlafer and his first A-Main win in a sprint car, Pokorski reeled Schlafer in and passed him on lap 24 for the lead and the win.  Taking the checkered flag after Pokorski and Schlafer were Ostrowski, Emme, and Luedke.

Frank Geiger of Whitelaw took the lead of the 25 lap Late Model feature at the drop of the green flag. Cleveland’s Jim Schmidt was chasing him down until Milwaukee’s Turk Letizia got together with Schmidt, sending both cars to the back of the field. This handed Craig Schueffner of Sheboygan Falls second place. Oostburg’s Todd Jensema was chasing Geiger and Schueffner and on lap 11 passed Schueffner for second. On lap 15, Jensema found himself crossing the line in front of Geiger. The field would be stopped for a major mishap on the backstretch retiring 5 cars to the pits for the remainder of the race. Jensema paced the field back to the green and showed the way to the checkers for his 2nd feature win of the year at Manitowoc Expo followed by Gordie Seegert of Oostburg, New London’s Justin Ritchie, Ron Berna of Green Bay, and Schueffner. Jensema picked up the extra winnings donated by Baleigh Industrial of Manitowoc.

The 20 lap Grand National feature was caution free. Mark Fieber of Cascade took the lead until Belgium’s Scott Houpt took over on lap 4. Mike Bastian of Manitowoc moved into third place on lap 5 after starting 10th. Brett Wenzel of Two Rivers was also on the move after starting 9th and was right behind Bastian on lap 7. Wenzel passed Bastian for third on lap 9 and then went after Fieber. On lap 13, Wenzel passed Fieber for second and then challenged Houpt several times for the lead. Houpt hung on for the win followed by Wenzel, Bastian, Fieber, and Milwaukee’s Dan Schumacher. Houpt was the recipient of the extra purse money donated by Dick Piel and Krajnik Chevrolet of Two Rivers. Don Schumacher of Oconomowoc was also the recipient of extra winnings donated by Krajnik Chevrolet of Two Rivers. The Chermake “Hot Dog” Hard Charger Award came from the Grand National Division this week and the recipient of that was Brett Wenzel for passing 7 cars.

The 15 lap Hobby Stock feature saw pole sitter, Josh Schroeder of Manitowoc, take the lead for the first lap. Newton’s Mike Kaufmann took the reigns on lap 2 until lap 10. Adam Krepline of Manitowoc took over control of the race from Kaufmann on lap 10 and took home his 5th feature checkered flag of the year. Following Krepline to the line was Kaufmann, Sheboygan’s Jeff Leonhard, Schroeder, and Zac Minster of Sheboygan.

The Mighty 4’s only ran an 8 lap feature since there were a limited number of them on hand for the night. Plymouth’s Amber Rabe took the lead from the start and was challenged several times by Kyle Resch of Manitowoc. Resch couldn’t get the job done and Rabe crossed the finish line first to take home her 2nd feature win this year at Manitowoc Expo.

The best decorated “hauler” went to Rick Minster in the “little red pit shack”. Rick won 2 pre-season Packer tickets for his Christmas in July decorating efforts. Racing continues next Friday, August 1st with EWSC honoring the fire and police departments.
