Kistner Wins Second A-Main

By Mary Horneck

Manitowoc, WI., September 16, 2007 - With only 22 points separating first and second places in the Winged Super Modified division, Kris Hansen of Manitowoc and Chuck Tuschl of Reedsville needed every point going into the final night of the 2007 season. Only 25 points behind Tuschl, Butch Hafemann of Campbellsport began the night in third. After Tuschl gained 3 points in the heat race on point leader Hansen, the A-Main would determine the championship.
Photo Highlights Three time feature winner Steve Bricker of Two Rivers jumped into the initial lead with past track champion Pete Ostrowski of Troy Center and last week’s A-Main winner Brandon McMullen of Plymouth chasing him down.

Only one caution would halt the racing action for a rolled car in lap two. When the green flag flew, McMullen used the outside of the track to charge into second behind leader Bricker but Ostrowski readjusted and charged passed McMullen in the next lap to take back the challenge spot. Two laps later, Ostrowski tucked his car inside and charged passed Bricker to take control of the race. Battling point leaders Tuschl and Hansen raced into fourth and fifth early in the race behind third place McMullen. Leader and heat winner Ostrowski checked out in front of the field and easily charged through the checkered flag to win his fourth A-Main of the season. Bricker followed in second with two-time feature winner McMullen in third. Tuschl and Hansen, with one feature win a piece, rounded out the top five. After the points were totaled, Kris Hansen of Manitowoc was crowned the 2007 EWSC Winged Super Modified Track Champion. Coming into the race program, Dan Dippel of Plymouth held a 168-point lead over second place Howie Weiss of Glenbeulah. With only 92 points possible for a clean-sweep, Dippel was locked in as the 2007 EWSC Limited Late Model Track Champion. In the A-Main, last week’s A-Main winner Jay Crichton of Lake Villa, Illinois grabbed the early lead with Scott Haugstad of Plymouth chasing him down. Eric Michaels of Cleveland and Jeff Sayler of Howards Grove battled behind them for third. By lap four, Sayler took the position but two laps later, track champion Dippel passed him to take over third in lap 6. Dippel continued his charge by taking over the challenge spot a lap later. A caution appeared in lap seven which relined up the field with five time feature winner Crichton out in front and Dippel and Haugstad side by side behind him. When the green flag flew, Dippel and Haugstad battled side by side for second with Dippel holding onto the position in lap 8. A lap later, Haugstad beat Dippel to the line by just inches to be scored second but Dippel charged down the front stretch and into the corner taking back the challenge spot in the next lap. When he caught up to the back of Crichton, Dippel tucked his car inside to attempt to pass for the lead but Crichton held him off. For the final four laps, Crichton and Dippel charged door to door around the Manitowoc track in a great battle for the win. On the final corner, Crichton and Dippel charged onto the front stretch with only inches separating their two cars. At the start/finish line, Crichton and Dippel crossed the line almost dead even. With a split scoring decision in a very close finish, Crichton won his sixth A-Main of the season. Dippel finished almost even in second with Haugstad in third.

With 78 points separating first place Brett Wenzel of Two Rivers and past track champion Brian Gilles of Plymouth and 112 points possible for a clean sweep in the Grand National division, second place Gilles had his work cut out for him. Gilles edged out Wenzel to be the fast qualifier which gained Gilles 5 points but Wenzel fought back by winning his heat when Gilles finished third which advanced Wenzel by 7 points. With only 77 points to win the A-Main, Wenzel wrapped up the 2007 EWSC Grand National Track Championship before the main event. When the green flag flew for the A-Main, Jason Winkler of New Holstein charged into the lead with Jerry Brickner of Mishicot chasing him down. Winkler distanced his car out in front for laps with Bob Peter of Howards Grove moving into the challenge spot by lap eight with two time feature winner Gilles directly behind him. As Peter and Gilles battled back and forth for laps, Wenzel and Chad Kistner of New Holstein moved into the top five. At the line in lap 14, Gilles pulled just ahead of Peter for second. As Gilles set his sights on leader Winkler, Wenzel pulled up next to Peter to battle for third. Though a series of caution flags which sent point leader Wenzel and Peter to the pits, Winkler was pulled back to just in front of the restart with Gilles and Kistner directly behind him and only two laps to the end of the race. When the green flag flew, Kistner charged on the high side of the track to take over the lead at the white flag with team mate Winkler chasing him down. At the checkered flag, Kistner won his second A-Main of the season. Heat winner Winkel followed in second with two-time feature winner Gilles in third. Jerry Wenzel of Two Rivers and Keith Kellenbenz of Manitowoc rounded out the top five.

With a 157-point lead in the Eastern 8 standings coming into the night’s racing program, eight time feature winner Brad Ruh of Elkhart Lake was named the 2007 EWSC Eastern 8 Track Champion. Without interruption, the Eastern 8 A-Main would race green flag to checkered with Jeff Leonhard of Sheboygan charging into the early lead and Josh Schroeder of Manitowoc chasing him down in second. Two-time feature winner Steven Ruh of Chilton moved into third by lap two with Kevin Lubach of Elkhart Lake challenging him in the next lap for the position. Ruh held off Lubach and set his sights on Schroeder. After completing lap five, Ruh tucked his car to the inside and after passing Schroeder for second, Ruh pulled side by side with leader Leonhard to race passed the flagstand just feet behind the leader. Leonhard pulled ahead for the next couple laps as new track champion Brad Ruh pulled into third. Steven Ruh charged out of turn two and passed Leonhard on the back stretch to take over control of the race in lap nine. A lap later, Brad Ruh passed Leonhard to take over second with five laps to the end. At the checkered flag, after winning his heat race, Steven Ruh charged through to win his third A-Main of the season. Brad Ruh followed in second with heat winner Leonhard finishing third. Schroeder and Mark Vranak of Sheboygan rounded out the top five.

With a 96 point lead and only 92 points available, JJ Anderson of Pulaski was named the 2007 EWSC Mighty 4 Track Champion. When the green flag flew for the Mighty 4 A-Main, Tim Simon of St. Peter charged into the early lead with Jacob Meyer and Amber Rabe, both of Plymouth, chasing him down. Just before the only caution flag appeared in lap six, Kyle Resch of Manitowoc charged into third. When the green flag flew to restart the race, Simon set the pace out in front with Meyer chasing him from second again. Just as Meyer was reeling leader Simon in while holding off third place Resch, Simon dropped out with a flat tire. Meyer held off Resch and took control of the rest of the race. As Meyer distanced his car out in front, Rabe pulled in behind Resch to take over third. At the checkered flag, Meyer charged through to win his first EWSC A-Main of the season. Resch followed in second with Rabe finishing third. Michael Zitzer and Steven Brion, both of Sheboygan, rounded out the top five.

Without interruption, the IMCA-style Modified A-Main ran green flag to checkered with heat winner Mike Klenz of West Bend charging out into the early lead with Chris Piquette of Random Lake moving into the challenge position in lap four. Mike Plate of Newton charged after Piquette with Pete Ostrowski of Troy Center pressuring Plate for fourth. With leader Klenz solidly out in front and approaching lapped traffic, Piquette focused on catching up to him. By lap 15, Piquette was making up ground on leader Klenz but only five laps remained. Behind them, Plate and Ostrowski battled side by side down the front stretch for third place. At the checkered flag, Klenz charged through to win his first EWSC A-Main. Piquette followed in second with Plate holding off Ostrowski to finish third. Behind fourth place Ostrowski, Bill Tandetzke of Milwaukee rounded out the top five.
