By Mary Horneck

Manitowoc, WI.; September 9, 2007 - n the third special MSA 360 point show races in two weekends, the top five heat race finishers and the top seven in the B-Main lined up for the 25-lap Sprint A-Main with Scott Sippel of Elkhart Lake grabbing the early lead and Brian Kristian of Zion, Illinois chasing him down. Kristian wasted no time in charging passed Sippel in lap three to take over the lead. Two laps later, Danny Schlafer of Sussex moved into second and set his sights on catching Kristian.
Photo Highlights Behind third place Sippel, Robbie Priebnow of Mayville and last Saturday’s A-Main winner Allen Schlafer of Sussex raced in the top five.

Just as Danny Schlafer charged passed Kristian to take over the lead in lap eight, the first red flag appeared for a rolled car in turns three and four. Kristian and Sippel lined up directly behind leader Danny Schlafer when the green flag flew. A lap after the caution, fast qualifier and new track record holder Lance Fassbender of Burnett moved into the top five. As Danny Schlafer began distancing his car out in front of the field with Kristian chasing after him, a final caution appeared in lap 15 to pull the leader back to within striking distance. When the green flag flew, Schlafer again charged out into the lead with Kristian, Sippel, Priebnow and Fassbender chasing him down. Three laps later, last Sunday’s A-Main winner TJ Luedke of Plymouth tucked his car to the inside of Fassbender to race side by side with him down the front stretch battling for fifth. Luedke stuck to Fassbender and at the line in lap 20, Luedke took over fifth with five laps to the end. At the checkered flag, Danny Schlafer won his first EWSC A-Main. Kristian followed in second with Sippel in third. Priebnow finished fourth with heat winner Luedke rounding out the top five.
In Winged Super Modified racing action, two-time feature winner Steve Bricker of Two Rivers charged into the early lead with last Saturday’s A-Main winner rookie Brandon McMullen of Plymouth chasing him down. Bricker was able to check out in front early leaving Brandon with at least a quarter of a track to catch him. As Bricker easily maneuvered the Manitowoc track, McMullen threw his car to the high side of the track to reel him in. Just as McMullen was able to pull within striking distance, something must have broke on Bricker’s car as he pulled to the infield. McMullen never missed a beat as he charged out into the lead with Kris Hansen of Manitowoc and his father Tim McMullen also of Plymouth chasing him down. But there would be no catching Brandon as he charged through to win his second A-Main in as many weeks. Hansen followed in second with Tim McMullen in third.

Plymouth’s Scott Haugstad jumped into the early lead in the Limited Late Model A-Main with four-time feature winner Jay Crichton of Lake Villa, Illinois moving in behind him just before Haugstad’s car broke causing the first and only yellow flag in lap three and sending him to the pits unable to return. Crichton set the pace on the restart with Howie Weiss of Glenbeulah and Paul Dingel of Sheboygan chasing him down. Three laps later, as Weiss focused on leader Crichton, five time feature winner Dan Dippel of Plymouth threw his car to the outside of the track to pull three abreast with Dingel and Jeff Badendorfer Jr of Waterford in a great battle for third place. Dippel took over the position but Dingel stuck to him for the next couple laps racing side by side around the track. Crichton charged for the remaining laps and took the checkered flag to win his fifth main of the season. Weiss followed in second with Dippel, Badendorfer and Dingel rounded out the top five.

Tim Conard of Manitowoc took the early lead in the Grand National A-Main with Brad Lubach of Elkhart Lake charging after him from the very first lap. Two Rivers’ Gregg Haese grabbed third by the second lap to race after Lubach in their pursuit for the lead. Coming out of turn four to complete lap three, Lubach threw his car to the high side of the track and charged down the front stretch taking over the lead at the line. A lap later, Haese also passed Conard to take over second as he began his chase of Lubach. Chad Kistner of New Holstein charged into fourth with Jason Dyer also of New Holstein and Will Sorce of Franklin battling side by side for laps for fifth place. As Lubach began distancing his car out in front, Kistner pulled passed Conard to take over third and begin his chase of second place Haese. By lap nine, Sorce broke free and took over fourth with a three wide battle between Conard, Dyer and Bob Peter of Howards Grove for fifth. Two laps later, Peter took over the position but Conard battled back and edged out Peter at the line in lap 12 to take back fifth. Peter broke free from him the next lap and wasted no time in passing Sorce to take over fourth just before the first caution appeared in lap 13. When the green flag flew to restart the race, Lubach set the pace with Haese and Kistner directly behind him. In lap 15, just five laps from the end, as Haese and Kistner chased leader Lubach, Sorce jumped back into fourth as five time feature winner Brett Wenzel of Two Rivers moved into fifth. Coming out of turn four to complete the next lap, Haese tucked his car inside of Lubach to charge side by side even in the corner. As Lubach and Haese flew down the front stretch, Lubach pulled ahead of Haese to hold onto the lead. Each lap Haese attempted to tuck his car inside again but Lubach charged through the checkered flag to win his second A-Main of the season. Haese followed in second with Kistner finishing third. Sorce finished fourth with Wenzel following in fifth after winning his heat race and setting a new track record in qualifying.

In IMCA-style Modified racing action, Eric Scribner of Forest Junction charged into the early lead in the 20-lap A-Main with Kyle Kudick of Two Rivers moving into second by lap two. Something appeared to break on Scribner’s car as he pulled off the track in the next lap turning over the top spot. Kudick wasted no time in charging out into the lead with heat winner Frank Firari of Lowell moving into second to chase him down. As Kudick began lapping traffic, Firari used the high side of the track to reel the leader in with Rob Schmid of Burnett moving into third. In lap 12, Don Scheffler of Wauwatosa passed Schmid to move into third. A lap later, Firari was within striking distance of leader Kudick as he threw his car to the high side of the track coming out of turn four. Kudick held him off for the next two laps as he and Firari raced door to door around the Manitowoc track. At the line in lap 15, Firari’s charged paid off as he took over the lead with five laps to go. Behind leader Firari and Kudick, a three wide battle for third developed between Scheffler, Randy Markwardt Jr. of Sheboygan Falls and Schmid. A lap later, Scheffler broke free leaving Markwardt and Schmidt to charge side by side for another lap for control of fourth. In the front of the field, Kudick attempted to tuck his car to the inside of leader Firari to pressure for the lead. At the white flag, Firari and Kudick charged side by side down the front stretch with only inches separating their cars. Into turns one and two, they charged and onto the back stretch still door to door. Kudick kept his car tucked inside going into turns three and four as Firari charged up high. In the final turn, Firari raced down the front stretch with Kudick right next to him. At the checkered flag, Firari inched out Kudick to win his first A-Main with Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars. Kudick followed in second with Scheffler in third. Pete Ostrowski of East Troy made a final lap pass to finish in fourth with Schmid following in fifth.

After a single caution flag after the first lap was completed, heat winner Amber Rabe of Plymouth jumped into the lead of the Mighty 4 A-Main with Tim Simon of St. Peter chasing her down. By lap four, Gary Novitski of Two Rivers moved into third with Greg Gierke of Kiel taking over fourth a lap later. Rabe and Simon charged through turns three and four with Simon pulling into the lead in the corner but Rabe hit the front stretch and charged passed the flag stand taking back the lead. In lap eight, Novitski and Andy Kleczka of Suamico both passed Simon to race side by side down the front stretch battling for second. Kleczka pulled into second a lap later and began chasing Rabe for the lead. At the half way point, Simon and Gierke battled for fourth behind Rabe, Kleczka and Novitski. Three laps later, Kleczka tucked his car to the inside of Rabe coming out of turn four. As Rabe and Kleczka charged down the front stretch side by side, the two competitors crossed the scoring line with only inches separating the lead. A lap later, Kleczka pulled into the top spot with Novitski pulling side by side with Rabe to edge her out at the line for second. Rabe broke free, grabbed second place and set her sights on taking back control of the race. Kleczka charged around the Manitowoc track pulling ahead of Rabe and the field but a flat tire halted his bid for the win at the white flag moving Rabe back into the lead. Novitski pulled out all the stops to catch Rabe and win the race but Rabe remained focused to charge through the checkered flag to win her first A-Main of the season. Novitski followed in second with Ralph Liegeois of Oconto moving into third. Simon and five time feature winner JJ Anderson of Pulaski rounded out the top five.

Manitowoc’s Josh Schroeder charged into the early lead in the Eastern 8 A-Main with Jeff Leonhard of Sheboygan and Mike Kaufmann of Newton chasing him down. When an early caution flag relined up the field, Leonhard set the pace with Kaufmann and two-time feature winner Steven Ruh of Chilton directly behind him. When the green flag flew, Ruh charged into the lead with Brett Koehler of Two Rivers jumping from fifth to second and three time feature winner Kevin Ruh of Elkhart Lake grabbing third. A second caution was called for debris in lap five which relined up the field again. When the green flag flew, Steven Ruh set the pace with Kevin Ruh charging into second. Coming through the corner to finish lap 7, the Ruhs charged side by side in a battle for the lead. Steven held off Kevin at the flag stand to hold onto the lead but before another lap could be completed Steven pulled his car to the infield unable to continue. Kevin Ruh wasted no time in charging out in front with Koehler moving into second. Troy Bartel of Chilton followed Koehler into third when the final caution appeared. When the green flag flew, Kevin Ruh charged into the lead with Bartel following him into second. As Ruh and Bartel began distancing their cars out in front, Koehler chased after them. At the checkered flag, Kevin Ruh won his fourth feature of the season. Bartel followed in second with Kevin Lubach of Elkhart Lake moving into third at the white flag. Koehler and Kaufmann rounded out the top five.
