Manitowoc, WI.; September 1, 2007 - After four full heat races and 2 B-Mains, the 360 Sprint A-Main rolled out onto the track with the top 22 competitors parading in a four wide line up in front of a packed grandstand at the Manitowoc County Expo race track for the first of two nights of Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars Labor Day racing.
Photo Highlights When the green flag flew, the motors roared with Allen Schlafer of Sussex jumping into the early lead with Jason Johnson of Allenton and Dave Enders of Kiel chasing him down.
By the third lap, Danny Schlafer also of Sussex pulled into fourth with fast qualifier Lance Fassbender of Burnett moving into the top five a lap later. A caution after lap seven involving Dan Schlafer sent his car to the pits unable to return to the race. When the green flag flew again, Allen Schlafer charged out into the front again with Johnson, Enders, Fassbender and Troy Wondra of Lomira racing after him in the top five. Just after half-way through the race, in lap 16, a second caution halted the hard-charging racing action briefly. When the green flag flew, Schlafer continued his charge in the lead with Enders passing Johnson to take over the challenge spot. In the same lap, Brian Portschy of Oostburg grabbed fourth place with Fassbender behind him. A lap later, Wondra charged passed Fassbender to take over fifth but Fassbender fought back and rejoined the top five in lap 19. When a caution was needed for debris after lap 23, the cars took the green flag for a two lap dash to the checkered flag. Unfortunately, a multi-car accident happened in turn four with a tightly packed field of cars collecting six competitors sending all six to the pits unable to finish the race. When the green flag flew for a green-white-checkered finish, Schlafer charged out into the lead again with Johnson moving back into the challenge spot. At the white flag, Fassbender and TJ Luedke of Plymouth raced side by side down the front stretch with Fassbender scored third. Mark Wernes Jr of Mukwonago moved into the top five after the restart. When the checkered flag flew, Schlafer won the 360 Sprint car main event. Johnson followed in second with Luedke making a final lap pass to finish third. Fast qualifier Fassbender followed in fourth with Wernes rounding out the top five.
Manitowoc’s Kris Hansen charged into the early lead in the Winged Super Modified A-Main and created a safe distance between his car and past track champion Tim McMullen of Plymouth in second. Tim’s son, rookie Brandon McMullen also of Plymouth moved into third by lap three and began pressuring his father for the challenge spot. For laps, with Hansen out in front, Brandon pulled next to Tim and then Tim would pull ahead. After lap 10 was completed, the spark was lit as Brandon threw his car to the high side coming out of turn four as Tim stuck to the low groove. Side by side father and son entered turn one. As the two charged out of turn two and on to the back stretch, Brandon took over second and set his sights on leader Hansen. Looking to be on a mission, Brandon tore around the Manitowoc track and caught up to the back of Hansen. When the white flag appeared, Brandon again threw his car to the outside of Hansen as the two charged down the front stretch. Side by side, Hansen and Brandon charged into turn one. Again coming out of turn two, Brandon took over the position as he passed Hansen on the back stretch to take over the lead with two corners to go. Brandon continued the charge through the checkered flag winning his first Winged Super Modified A-Main. Hansen followed in second with Tim McMullen in third. Past track champion Pete Ostrowski of Troy Center and Steve Bricker of Two Rivers rounded out the top five.

Jeff Sayler of Howards Grove grabbed the early lead in the Limited Late Model A-Main with Brad Lubach of Elkhart Lake charging after him in second and past track champion and current point leader Dan Dippel of Plymouth moving into third by lap two. Lubach charged hard through turns three and four and took over the lead in lap four but something must have broke and Lubach dropped out of the lead and off the track. Sayler slid back into the top spot with Dippel tucking his car inside to race side by side across the line in lap five. Scott Sohrweide of Chilton moved into third behind the battling duo. Sayler held Dippel off for two laps but in lap seven, Dippel took control of the race while Dave Haag of Plymouth and four-time feature winner Jay Crichton of Lake Villa, Illinois battled side by side for fourth. At the half-way point of the 20-lap race, Sohrweide made his move and took over second from Sayler. Coming through turn four to complete lap 10, Sohrweide was in the lead but Dippel charging high on the Manitowoc track pulled down the front stretch and crossed the line ahead of Sohrweide. Dippel and Sohrweide charged around the track again and going into turn three, the two raced door to door and once again Sohrweide appeared to take over the lead but once again Dippel charged down in front of the grandstand in the lead. A lap later, at the line in 12, Dippel edged out Sohrweide again by only inches at the line. As Dippel and Sohrweide charged around the track again, Dippel pulled his car ahead of Sohrweide but Sohrweide stuck to his bumper never letting him get an advantage. After lap 15 was completed, Sohrweide tucked his car tight around the inside groove to pull side by side with Dippel again. Again, it was hard to tell who would lead coming out of turn four but Sohrweide had the lead by mere inches in lap 17 with three laps to go. Sohrweide and Dippel charged around the track again and once again, Sohrweide edged out Dippel at the line in lap 18. With Sohrweide tucked down low, Dippel threw his car even higher on the track in an attempt to pick up more traction and it worked. As the white flag flew, Dippel charged back into the lead with Sohrweide chasing him down. A lap later, after winning his heat race earlier in the program, past track champion Dippel beat Sohrweide to the line in the lap that counted and won his fifth A-Main of the season. Sohrweide followed in second with heat winner Crichton following in third. Sayler and Haag rounded out the top five.

The Grand National 20-lap A-Main charged around the Manitowoc track without interruption with a tightly packed field of the top 20 cars that either qualified directly into the main event or transferred from the front of the B-Main. Bob Peter of Howards Grove charged into the early lead with Phil Coppersmith chasing him down and Donny Kulow of Plymouth on his bumper. Past track champion Brian Gilles also of Plymouth and last week’s feature winner Brad Lubach of Elkhart Lake joined the tightly packed top five early in the race. At the line in lap five, Peter had a small comfortable lead over the hard-charging cars behind him with Kulow moving into second. A lap later, Lubach charged into third with Gilles inside his car in fourth. Three time feature winner Don Sorce of West Allis moved in behind them in fifth. Gilles and Sorce inched passed Lubach in the next lap to move up to third and fourth. By lap eight, Gilles continued his charge and took over the challenge spot behind leader Peter. Gilles charged after Peter for the next three laps to cut the distance between their cars. At the half-way point in lap 10, Gilles threw his car to the high side of the track to cross the flag stand just inches in the lead. A lap later, Sorce also passed Peter to stick to the back of Gilles with heat winner Chad Kistner of New Holstein charging into fourth behind Peter. As Gilles charged out in front in the next lap with Sorce chasing him down, Peter, Lubach and Kistner charged three wide down the front stretch in a hard-fought battle for third. In the next lap, Sorce tucked his car to the inside of the track to make up ground on leader Gilles as Kistner on the high side of the track broke free of the trio and took over third. Coppersmith moved back into the top five behind fourth place Lubach. At the line in lap 14, Gilles and Sorce raced side by side with Gilles holding onto the lead by a bumper. Five laps from the end, in lap 15, Sorce charged passed Gilles to take over the lead with Kistner charging after them. Two laps later, Lubach made his move by tucking to the inside to take over third from Kistner and pulling side by side with Gilles on the front stretch. In the next lap, Lubach took over the challenge position with two laps to go. As Lubach focused on catching leader Sorce, Kistner readjusted his line and moved inside Gilles to charged door to door down the front stretch at the white flag. When the checkered flag flew, Sorce won his fourth Grand National A-Main this season. After winning the last EWSC A-Main, Lubach followed in second with heat winner Kistner making a last lap pass to finish third. Two-time feature winner Gilles followed in fourth with Coppersmith rounding out the top five.

A single yellow flag after the first lap was completed was the only interruption in the Mighty 4 15-lap A-Main as point leader JJ Anderson of Pulaski jumped from fifth place in lap one to first in lap two after the restart. Manitowoc’s Kyle Resch charged into second with Tim Simon of St. Peter behind him in third. Heat winner RJ Liegeois of Pulaski pulled into fourth in lap four with Jamie Miller of Suamico racing into fifth a lap later. When the field completed lap seven, an on-track incident sent Miller to the pits with Amber Rabe of Plymouth moving into the top five. As leader Anderson charged out in front alone, Simon threw his car to the high side of the track to pressure Resch for the challenge spot with Greg Gierke of Kiel and Rabe battling back and forth for fifth. Three laps from the end, Simon took over second with Resch following him into third. At the checkered flag, Anderson charged through to win his fifth A-Main of the season. Simon followed in second with Resch, Rabe and Gierke rounding out the top five.

In the Eastern 8 A-Main, Josh McDonald of Sheboygan grabbed the early lead through a couple yellow flag restarts with Brett Koehler of Two Rivers chasing him down. By lap five, six time feature winner and division point leader Brad Ruh of Elkhart Lake charged into third. Two laps later, through a couple more restarts, Ruh jumped into the lead with Koehler, McDonald and Kevin Ruh of Elkhart Lake battling three wide for second. Kevin Ruh came through the battle to take over the challenge position and begin his chase of leader Brad Ruh. In the same lap, John Mahlberg of Hilbert moved in behind Kevin Ruh to take over third with Josh McDonald and Matt McDonald of Manitowoc racing in the top five. As the one-minute-per-lap time limit counted off, Brad Ruh began lapping traffic forcing Kevin Ruh and Mahlberg to weave through traffic to stay close to the leader. But when the time expired in lap 17, Brad Ruh charged through the checkered flag to win his seventh A-Main of the season. Kevin Ruh, with three feature wins of his own, followed in second with two-time feature winner Mahlberg finishing third. Josh McDonald and Matt McDonald rounded out the top five.

Joining EWSC, the Rascal Outlaws A-Main began with a side by side battle for the lead from the very beginning of the 12-lap race with two drivers from McHenry, Illinois, Jim Thiel and John Benkert. Thiel held the lead in the first lap but Benkert inched him out at the line to hold the lead in laps two and three. Thiel battled back and retook the lead in lap four with Benkert charging the high side to stick with the leader. By lap six, the two were side by side passed the flagstand again with Thiel holding on to the top spot. In the next lap, Benkert was scored in the lead by inches at the line but Thiel was not done yet. For the next five laps, Thiel charged through without giving up the lead again. At the checkered flag, Thiel won both his heat race and the Rascal Outlaw main event. Benkert followed in second with Mark Findley of Richmond, Illinois finishing third.
