First Mains for Tuschl, Dingel & Damrow; Second Wins for Kuhfuss & Mahlberg
By Mary Horneck

Manitowoc, WI.; May 19, 2007 - In the Winged Super Modified A-Main, at the drop of the green flag, rookie driver Dan Dippel of Plymouth jumped into the top spot with Paul Pokorski of West Bend charging after him. The second caution would send both Dippel and Pokorski to the pits leaving Chuck Tuschl of Reedsville and last week’s A-Main winner Butch Hafemann of Campbellsport in first and second.

Mark Dingel (#21) won the non-stop Limited Late Model main event.
Dale Damrow won an action packed Grand National Sportsman feature contest at the Manitowoc County Expo.
John Mahlberg collected another checkered flag in Eastern 8 feature action.
Nick Sheridan (#88) made the long trip from Illinois worth his effort by taking the victory in the Mini-Sprint division.
Mike Kuhfuss (#17) proved best this evening in 4 cylinder feature action.

hen the green flag flew again, Tuschl charged out in front with Hafemann tucking his car to the inside in turn one to attempt to take back to back wins but Tuschl held him off and charged through the checkered flag to win his first A-Main of the season. After finishing second, Hafemann secured the division point lead. Scott Mohs of Plymouth followed the battling duo in third.

The Limited Late Model A-Main charged through the turns from green flag to checkered without interruption as heat winner Mark Dingel of Sheboygan charged out into the early lead with duo-division driver Dan Dippel of Plymouth chasing him down. Last week’s feature winner Howie Weiss of Glenbeulah, currently the division point leader, stuck to Dippel in his attempt for two A-Main wins in a row. By lap five, Weiss tucked his car to the inside of Dippel in turn four but Dippel beat Weiss to the line to hold onto second. A lap later, with Dingel racing the high side of the track, Weiss tucked his car in the middle groove to pass Dippel at the line to take over second. Weiss charged after leader Dingel down the back stretch with Dippel still close. As Weiss threw his car hard into turn three, the momentum sent Weiss into the infield losing second place to Dippel. Now Dippel began his chase for the lead as Dingel charged comfortably out in front. Scott Haugstad of Plymouth who experienced mechanical problems earlier charged into third to chase down the frontrunners. As Dippel approached, Dingel refused to give him an opportunity to strike and charged through the checkered flag to win his first A-Main of the season. Dippel followed in second with Haugstad in third.

As the Grand National feature hit the Manitowoc track, the competitors charged three and four wide through the turns with Dale Damrow of Sheboygan charging out into the early lead with Jerry Brickner of Mishicot chasing him down. Bob Peter of Howards Grove moved into third by the second lap. Three laps later, Brickner and Peter were engaged in a battle for second place as the two raced down the front stretch side by side. At the line in lap six, Peter inched out Brickner to take second just before a caution would freeze the racing action and reline up the field. When the green flag flew again, Damrow kept the lead with Peter charging after him in second. Bob Cullen of Chilton and Brian Gilles of Plymouth raced after Peter with Jerry Wenzel of Two Rivers moving into fifth. A lap later, Cullen took over second behind the leader as Peter charged after him to pressure for the challenge position. With Cullen, Peter and Gilles running side by side and bumper to bumper through the turns, Gilles took over second in lap 10 by inches just a lap before the race was halted again for debris on the track. On the restart, Gilles left for the pits with mechanical problems. Damrow charged through the green flag again with Peter and Cullen pressuring for the lead. Peter tucked his car to the inside of Damrow in lap twelve to challenge for the lead but Damrow held him off. For the next couple laps, Peter continued to tuck his car inside leader Damrow attempting to pass through the corners but Damrow came out of the turns in the lead each time. At the checkered flag, Damrow charged down the front stretch to win his first A-Main of the season with Brett Wenzel of Two Rivers making a last lap pass to finish second. Jerry Wenzel, Mike Plate of Newton and Tim Warner of Malone rounded out the top five.

In the Mighty 4 A-Main, Greg Gierke of Kiel charged into the early lead with Kyle Resch of Manitowoc and JJ Anderson of Pulaski battling for second behind him. Anderson took over the challenge spot and began his chase of leader Gierke. Season opener A-Main winner Mark Kuhfuss of Howards Grove, who rolled over last week, charged into third in lap five just before the only yellow flag appeared. When the green flag flew, Kuhfuss, who was lined up to the outside of second place Anderson and behind leader Gierke, flew into the lead from the high side of the track to take a commanding lead. Gierke charged after him to attempt to regain his lead but Kuhfuss remained focused. At the checkered flag, Kuhfuss won his second A-Main of the season. Gierke followed in second with Anderson, heat winner Ralph Liegeois of Oconto and Amber Rabe of Plymouth rounding out the top five.

By lap three of the Eastern 8 A-Main, a side by side battle for the lead developed as Bob Voigt of Little Chute and Steven Ruh of Chilton crossed the start/finish line with only inches placing Voigt in the lead. Ruh stuck to Voigt as the two competitors raced around the track and when they crossed the scoring line again, Ruh held the top spot. A lap later, last week’s A-Main winner John Mahlberg of Hilbert charged into second and began his chase for the lead. Just before the only yellow flag appeared in lap 10, Mahlberg charged into the lead then had to reline up with the field directly behind him. When the green flag flew, Adam Krepline of Manitowoc charged after leader Mahlberg with Mark Vranak of Sheboygan chasing them down. Krepline threw his car to the high side of the track to pressure for control of the race. Just after the scoring line in lap 12, Krepline passed Mahlberg as the two charged into turn one. Krepline and Mahlberg raced door to door down the back stretch and into turns three and four. When the two charged out of turn four and down the front stretch, Mahlberg edged out Krepline at the scoring line to take the lead again. Krepline continued the pressure and coming out of turn four the next lap, Krepline took over the lead but Mahlberg stuck to him not letting him get too comfortable in the top spot. At the line in lap 17, Krepline and Mahlberg charged bumper to bumper down the front stretch with three laps to the end of the race. As the field came through turn four to complete the final lap of the Eastern 8 A-Main, Mahlberg charged out of the corner, tucking his car to the inside of leader Krepline. At the line, Mahlberg took back the lead and won back to back A-Mains. Krepline followed in second with Matt McDonald of Sheboygan, Paul Steffens of Appleton and Vranak rounding out the top five.

Visiting EWSC, the Mini-Sprints A-Main rounded out the Saturday race with Kirtess Boers jumping into the early lead. Ron Brannam of Barrington, Illinois and Nick Sheridan of Fox Lake, Illinois charged bumper to bumper in second and third by lap four as they chased down the leader. A lap later, Brannam charged high on the track to pull side by side with Boers but at the line, Boers held onto the lead. Sheridan found his opening and charged passed Brannam to take over second. Sheridan continued his momentum on the high side of the track to take over the lead in lap seven. Five laps later, Brannam charged after Sheridan and raced bumper to bumper down the front stretch in a battle for the lead. Sheridan held off Brannam and took the checkered flag to win the Mini-Sprint A-Main. Brannam followed in second with Boers in third.
