Manitowoc, WI.; May 12, 2007 - Just as Pete Ostrowski of East Troy charged into the lead of the Winged Super Modified A-Main, the racing action was halted as the only yellow flag appeared. Ostrowski lined up in the front alone with Butch Hafemann of Campbellsport and Lee Mohs of Waldo behind him. As Ostrowski charged through the green flag and began setting a fast pace around the track, last week’s A-Main winner Paul Pokorski of West Bend raced into third behind Hafemann in second.
Photo Highlights
Butch Hafeman (#18) collected his first Winged Super Modified feature flag of the young 2007 racing season.
Howie Weiss (#11) grabbed the top spot in Limited Late Model feature action this week.
Don Sorce Jr. (#99) was the man to beat in Grand National Sportsman feature action this week at the Manitowoc County Fairgrounds.
Joel Beyer was victorious in the visiting CCRA Street Stocks
Bruce Sand (#90) who has raced on both dirt and asphalt, showed his skill on the clay taking the All-American Mighty 4 feature race.
Hafemann threw his car to the high side of the track to catch leader Ostrowski before giving him the chance to distance his car out in front. Just as the high groove seemed to work for Hafemann, Ostrowski appeared to have mechanical problems and slowed on the track. Hafemann charged out in front with rookie Modified driver Dan Dippel of Plymouth passing Chuck Tuschl of Reedsville to take over second. As Ostrowski pulled his car to the infield, Pokorski joined him as both strong contenders were unable to continue. Hafemann continued his charge as Dippel appeared to almost catch up to the leader on the backstretch but Hafemann flew through the turns to come out on top each lap. At the checkered flag, Hafemann won the second Modified A-Main of the 2007 season. Dippel followed in second with Tuschl, Bob Brion of Plymouth and Lee Mohs of Waldo rounding out the top five.

Polesitter Jeff Sayler of Howards Grove charged out into the early lead in the Limited Late Model A-Main with heat winner Scott Haugstad of Plymouth chasing him down in second. Sayler was able to distance his car out in front just slightly as Haugstad, Howie Weiss of Glenbeulah, last week’s feature winner Dan Dippel of Plymouth, and Mark Dingel of Sheboygan charged bumper to bumper clustered together with only inches separating the cars down the front stretch. Coming around to complete lap four, Weiss made a sweeping pass through turn four to take over second place. Dippel followed and took over third a lap later. As the field came through turn four again, Weiss threw his car to the inside of leader Sayler to challenge for the lead down the front stretch. Sayler and Weiss charged into turns one and two and Weiss flew down the backstretch taking over the lead. Sayler charged back and coming across the line in lap seven, the two competitors were only separated by inches with Weiss scored just ahead of Sayler. Weiss began distancing his car out in the lead as Dippel, racing double duty in the Limited Late Models and Modifieds tonight, charged after Sayler to take over the challenge position. Dippel threw his car hard into the corners and down the stretches, but Weiss remained solid and charged through the checkered flag to win the Limited Late Model A-Main. Dippel finished second with Sayler and heat winner Haugstad following in third and fourth.

Visiting driver Don Sorce Jr of West Allis charged into the lead of the Grand National A-Main in the second lap of the 20-lap race with Jerry Wenzel of Two Rivers racing after him in second and Brian Gilles of Plymouth just behind him. A lap later, Bob Peter of Howards Grove challenged Gilles for third and the two charged side by side down the front stretch. As the field raced through turn four to complete lap five, Wenzel was high on the track which sent Gilles to the inside to pressure for second place. A lap later, Gilles charged through to take over the challenge spot behind Sorce who had a health lead over the field. Wenzel was not settling into third as he threw his car into turn four passing Gilles to race to the line in lap nine. As Sorce was passing them, Wenzel had to maneuver around lapped traffic to catch up to the leader. With a couple lapped cars in between leader Sorce and second place Wenzel, Gilles regrouped and threw his car to the inside of Wenzel again to cross side by side at the line in lap 16. Cullen made his move in the same lap and took over fourth place from Peter. Before another lap could be completed, the only yellow flag would halt the racing action, pulling Sorce back to within challenging distance and remove the lapped car from between first and second. At the drop of the green flag which set up a four lap dash to the checkered flag, Sorce again charged out in front with Cullen making his move to take over second. Gilles raced after Cullen as Chad Kistner of New Holstein passed Peter to move into fourth. Leader Sorce used the high side of the track to charge through the checkered flag to win the Grand National A-Main with Cullen following in second. Kistner threw his car high on the outside of the track in the final turn to pass Gilles in the middle of turn four to finish third. Peter rounded out the top five.

After transferring 4 cars from the B-Main, the top 20 competitors in the Eastern 8 division lined up for the 20-lap A-Main and there was no stopping the hard-charging racing action as the race ran green flag to checkered as the field maneuvered around the Manitowoc track. Heat winner Bob Voigt of Little Chute charged into the early lead with Crystal Koenig of Denmark and Steven Ruh of Chilton chasing him down. Koenig tucked her car inside Voigt to pass for the lead in lap five with Ruh also passing Voigt to take up the challenge spot. A lap later, John Mahlberg of Hilbert moved into third with Brad Ruh of Elkhart Lake and Brett Koehler of Two River rounding out the top five by lap six. Halfway through the race, Steven Ruh and Mahlberg were hot on Koenig’s bumper. As leader Koenig approached lapped traffic, Mahlberg made his move taking over second in lap 13. A lap later, Mahlberg threw his car to the inside groove and pulled alongside Koenig at the scoring line. Mahlberg continued his charge and took over the lead in lap 15 with five laps left in the race. As the front runners maneuvered around the lapped traffic, Brad Ruh was able to pass both Steven Ruh and Koenig to take over second with only one lapped car between his car and leader Mahlberg. When the white flag flew, Brad Ruh tucked his car to the inside of Mahlberg to cross the flag with Mahlberg remaining in the lead by literally inches. Mahlberg charged into turns one and two determined to finish in front. At the checkered flag, Mahlberg’s work paid off as he won the Eastern 8 A-Main. In final lap shuffling, Koenig moved back into second with Steven Ruh, Brad Ruh and Keith Ruh of Elkhart Lake rounding out the top five.

In the Mighty 4 A-Main, Bruce Sand of Sheboygan charged into the lead on the first lap with Kyle Resch of Manitowoc and Jake Meyer of Plymouth battling for second from the drop of the green flag. Meyer took control of second in lap three as the field raced four-abreast through turn four and down the front stretch. Meyer threw his car to the high side of the track to reel in leader Sand with Greg Gierke of Kiel moving into third. At the half-way point of the race, Sand and Meyer raced bumper to bumper down the front stretch. Meyer stuck to the leader waiting for his opportunity to advance while heat winner JJ Anderson of Pulaski pulled ahead of Gierke to take over third in lap 12. A lap later, Meyer tucked his car to the inside to attempt a pass of the leader but Sand held him off as he charged forward into turn one. Anderson raced through the white flag just behind second place Meyer and stuck to him for the final lap. At the checkered flag, Sand won his first A-Main of the season. Meyer followed in second by inches over Anderson at the line. Gierke followed in fourth with heat winner Eddie LeMay rounding out the top five.

Visiting this week at EWSC, the CCRA Street Stocks remained tightly packed with great racing action in the divisions A-Main race. Matt Reinke of Reedsville jumped into the early lead with Ryan Eickert of Brillion on his bumper. Hank Horn Jr. also of Brillion moved into third. At the line in lap four, leader Reinke, Eickert and Horn charged down the front stretch three abreast to settle into the top spots. Horn took over second in the next lap. Eickert wasted no time in charging back as he threw his car to the outside to catch Horn but Joel Beyer of Reedsville tucked his car to the inside to create a three car battle for second. Horn held off the challenge as Beyer took over third. On the front stretch to complete lap eight, Horn caught up to the back of leader Reinke as the two charged bumper to bumper passed the grandstand. Three laps later, Beyer again tucked his car to the inside to challenge for second but Horn held him off again until Beyer continued his charge into turn one. As Horn and Beyer raced out of turn two, Beyer held the challenge spot and set his sights on the lead. A lap later, Beyer changed strategies as he now threw his car to the high side of the track to challenge for the lead. Coming out of turn four to complete lap 13, Beyer charged into the lead with two laps to go. Just as Beyer settled into the lead, Reinke left the race with a flat tire moving Horn into second. At the checkered flag, Beyer won the first Street Stock A-Main of the season. Horn followed in second with Jim Bangart of Chilton, Eickert, and heat winner Seth Hoeffner of Manitowoc rounding out the top five.
