Manitowoc Trophy Winners: Pokorski, Dippel, Lee, Oreskovich & Paul
By Mary Horneck

Manitowoc, WI.; September 10, 2006 -  On the Manitowoc Trophy Night at EWSC, Plymouth’s Dave Deicher jumped into the early lead in the Winged Super Modified A-Main with Steve Bricker of Two Rivers on his bumper. Eight-time feature winner Paul Pokorski of West Bend moved into third behind Bricker to chase down the lead.

In turn four, Pokorski threw his car to the outside of Bricker to take over the second spot in lap six. As Pokorski attempted to catch up to the hard charging Deicher, the first yellow flag appeared and pulled the leader back into the field. When the green flag flew, Deicher charged out in front until Pokorski again threw his car to the outside in turn four and passed for the lead on the front stretch. Billy Hafemann of Waldo also raced on the high side of the track in turn four to take over third from Bricker in lap ten. Hafemann then set his sights on second place and charged after Deicher. Four laps later, Hafemann made his move and secured the challenge spot but Pokorski had built quite a lead out in front. Hafemann continued his charge after the leader. Two laps later, fast qualifier Pete Ostrowski of East Troy made a sweeping move in lap 16 to pass Bricker for fifth in turn one and then pull alongside Deicher on the front stretch to take over third at the scoring line. Ostrowski began his chase for second to catch up to Hafemann. Just when the top three seemed to be checked out in front of the field, a final red flag pulled the field together after a competitor rolled in turn one. When the green flag flew for the four lap dash to the checkered flag, Pokorski now had Hafemann and Ostrowski on his bumper. Pokorski once again charged out in front with Ostrowski charging on the high side to take over second place. When the checkered flag flew, Pokorski won his ninth A-Main of the season. Ostrowski followed in second with Hafemann in third. Heat winners Bricker and Deicher rounded out the top five.

Visiting driver Jeff Wickersheim of White Lake charged into the lead of the Limited Late Model A-Main in the first lap with Dave Schaetzer of Sheboygan on his bumper though an early restart in lap two. When the green flag flew again, 11-time feature winner Dan Dippel of Plymouth charged passed Schaetzer to pull into second. Wickersheim built a healthy lead as Dippel was forced to chase him down. Heat winner Jeff Curtin of Shawano pulled into third behind Dippel and the three top runners used the extreme high side of the track to charge out in front. Just as the leader was coming up to the back of lapped traffic, a final yellow flag broke the momentum and relined up Dippel and Curtin directly behind the leader. Wickersheim charged out into the lead again with Dippel racing after him. Two laps after the caution, Dippel threw his car to the inside groove and charged out of turn four to take the lead in lap 13. Curtin followed Dippel to take over second with six laps to go. Coming down the front stretch to complete lap 16, Curtin attempted to tuck his car to the inside of the leader but Dippel charged out in front into turns one and two. Curtin continued his charge down low but Dippel took the checkered flag to win his twelfth A-Main of the season. Curtin followed in second with Wickersheim finishing third. Dave Haag of Glenbeulah and Terry Goetsch of Sheboygan rounded out the top five.

After competing through qualifying, four heat races and a 15-lap B-Main, the fastest 18 competitors lined up for the 20-lap Grand National A-Main. Without any yellow flags to halt the racing action, the hard charging competitors flew around the fast Manitowoc track. At the drop of the green flag, visiting driver Roger Lee charged into the early lead with Bob Peter of Howards Grove racing after him. Andy Fuhrmann of Brillion pulled into third with Brett Wenzel of Two Rivers right behind him. By lap six, Tim Thompson of Campbellsport pulled inside Wenzel to challenge for fourth place. A lap later, Thompson readjusted to the outside groove and crossed the scoring line with only inches placing him ahead of Wenzel. Wenzel charged back the next lap and took back fourth as Scott Sohrweide of Chilton moved into fifth. At the half-way point, Fuhrmann threw his car to the inside of Peter to challenge for second place. With Lee charging out in front alone, Fuhrmann moved into second in lap 13 with a half a track to make up. Leader Lee began lapping traffic as Fuhrmann held off Sohrweide to hold onto second. With five laps to go, Peter chased the Fuhrmann and Sohrweide battle as Jason Winkler of New Holstein passed Thompson to move into the top five. As the white flag flew, Winkler made his late lap pass to take over fourth from Peter. At the checkered flag, Lee won his first A-Main at EWSC. Fuhrmann followed in second with Sohrweide, Winkler and Peter rounding out the top five.

Only one yellow flag on the initial green flag halted the Mighty 4 A-Main event as competitors qualified through three heat races and the B-Main lined up for the main race. When the green reappeared, Jason Fish of Appleton charged into the lead with Greg Gierke of Kiel and Matthew Janke of Mequon chasing him down. A lap later, Aaron Stolp of West Allis took over third as Matt Oreskovich of Clintonville jumped from seventh into fourth with eight-time feature winner Tim Jorgenson of DePere on his bumper. At the line in lap four, Stolp and Oreskovich passed Gierke to take over second and third. Two laps later, Oreskovich pulled next to Fish to take over the lead at the line. The next lap Fish was scored back in the lead as his car, Oreskovich, Stolp all crossing the line side by side. As the three and four abreast cars charged into turns one and two, the leaders battled back and forth. When the field charged out of turn four, Oreskovich took the lead and began his charge out in front alone. Five laps from the end, Stolp charged after leader Oreskovich from second with a three wide battle for third developing with Fish, Gierke and Jorgenson side by side racing around the track. A lap later, Fish on the outside and Gierke on the inside charged through the scoring line with only inches placing Fish in third. Jorgenson hovered directly behind the battling duo waiting for his opportunity to advance. A lap later, the opportunity presented itself as Jorgenson charged passed Gierke to take over fourth. At the checkered flag, heat winner Oreskovich won his first EWSC Mighty 4 A-Main. Stolp followed in second with Fish, heat winner Jorgenson, and Gierke rounding out the top five.

Again no cautions would slow the racing action in the Eastern 8 A-Main as 18 competitors battled through three heat races and the B-Main to race in the main event. Heat winner Frank Paul of Kewaunee charged into the early lead with Jeff Sayler of Howards Grove chasing him down. Josh Schroeder of Manitowoc moved into third with Bret Koehler of Two Rivers charging behind him. As leader Paul approached lapped traffic, Koehler made his move in lap six and passed Schroeder to take over third. A lap later, Kevin Lubach of Elkhart Lake followed suit and moved into fourth place. At the half-way point of the race, last week’s feature winner Adam Krepline of Manitowoc moved into the top five. With leader Paul weaving through lapped traffic, the checkered flag approached as the rest of the field was forced to move through the back cars to catch the leader. In a white flag pass, Krepline charged passed Lubach to take over fourth. At the checkered flag, Paul won his first EWSC A-Main. Heat winner Sayler followed in second with five-time feature winner Koehler finishing third. Four time feature winner Krepline and heat winner Lubach rounded out the top five.
