Manitowoc, WI.; August 5, 2006 -The Winged Super Modified 30-lap A-Main barely started when a multi-car incident in turn three sent three competitors – Pete Ostrowski of East Troy, Tim McMullen of Plymouth and Lee Mohs of Waldo – rolling through the corner. After flipping over track guardrail, Ostrowski landed on a access lane running on the outside of turns three and four. Fortunately none of the drivers required medical assistance. After the track cleared, the remaining cars relined up to start the rest of the 29 laps left. |

Scott Mohs of Plymouth lined up in the front of the field with Dan Kruschke of Glenbeulah and Tyler Hansen of Manitowoc behind him. When the green flag flew, Kris Hansen of Manitowoc began his charge to the front as he pulled alongside Kruschke in lap two to battle for second. By lap five, Hansen caught leader Mohs and took over control of the race. At the same time, past track champion Paul Pokorski of West Bend was using the high side of the track to pull into third. A lap later, Pokorski swept passed Mohs to take over the challenge position behind leader Hansen. For the next three laps, Pokorski was within striking distance of Hansen as Pokorski threw his car high coming out of turn four but Hansen maintained control and charged down the front stretch still in the lead at the line. Pokorski’s charge paid off in lap ten as he took the lead and began lapping cars. Six laps later, Hansen was forced to the pits with mechanical problems on a yellow flag caution which pulled Pokorski back to the field. As the green flag flew, Pokorski charged into the lead again with Billy Hafemann of Waldo and his father, Butch Hafemann of Campbellsport chasing him down. Just before the final yellow flag in lap 21, Butch Hafemann left the track to the infield also with mechanical problems. When the green flag flew to restart the 9-lap dash to the checkered flag, Pokorski charged on the high side of the track as Billy Hafemann tucked down inside to challenge for the lead. Pokorski maintained control and charged through the final laps to take the checkered flag to win his fifth A-Main of the season. Billy Hafemann followed in second with heat winner Scott Mohs finishing third. Kruschke and returning driver Billy Kreutz rounded out the top five.
In the Limited Late Model A-Main, Scott Haugstad of Plymouth charged into the early lead with Dave Haag of Glenbeulah chasing him down. Coming out of turn four to complete the second lap, Haag tucked his car to the inside of the track to attempt to pass Haugstad but Haugstad charged down the front stretch still in the lead. A lap later, Mark Dingel of Sheboygan challenged Haag for second by tucking his car to the inside of Haag in turn four. The next lap had Haag outside, Dingel inside and defending track champion Dan Dippel of Plymouth in a three car battle for second as the competitors charged side by side out of turn four and down the front stretch. A lap later, Dippel took over third and set his sights on second. The outside worked for Dippel as he passed Haag to take over second in lap six and then pulled even with leader Haugstad at the start/ finish line. The charge continued as Dippel took over control of the race in lap seven. Two laps later, the battle began for second as Dingel pulled inside Haugstad even as the two came charging out of turn four. Haugstad motored down the front stretch ahead of Dingel at the line . Dingel took over second in lap 11 but Haugstad charged back and took back the challenge spot a lap later. At the checkered flag, Dippel won his eighth A-Main of the season with Haugstad following in second. Dingel, Haag and Dave Schaetzer of Sheboygan rounded out the top five. Winkler remained focused on the win and charged around the track to take the lead from Haese as the two competitors raced out of turn four to complete lap 14. Haese stuck to Winkler’s bumper for laps as Winkler charged high on the track to maintain control of the race. In lap 17, Winkler and Haese charged through turns three and four side by side with the two competitors exiting turn four even on the track. Winkler pulled ahead on the front stretch with Haese very close behind him. Coming around for lap 18, Winkler and Haese again pulled even with each other and Winkler motored down the front stretch in the lead. A lap later as the white flag flew, again the two competitors raced skillfully side by side with only inches separating the top spots in the race and only one lap to go. Winkler and Haese battled side by side for the final lap with both cars entering turns three and four next to each other. Coming out of turn four, both Winkler and Haese threw their cars to the high side of the track. Haese recovered from the slide a split second faster than Winkler as he tucked his car just inside Winkler’s and charged down the front stretch to win his first A-Main this season by inches over the hard-charging and two-time feature winner Winkler. Peter followed in third with Tim Thompson of Campbellsport and Ruh rounding out the top five. |

By lap four, J.J. Andersen of Pulaski pulled into second and began his challenge for the win but Meyer soundly charged out in front as he raced through the turns and down the straightaways. Heat winner Tim Simon of St. Peter moved into third by lap five to chase down Andersen for second. Through a couple early incidents, six-time feature winner Tim Jorgensen of DePere was held up but steadily began to climb through the field to move into fourth by lap eleven. As the laps clicked off, Meyer charged ahead of the field to win his second A-Main of the season. Andersen followed in second with Simon, heat winner Jorgenson and Greg Gierke of Kiel rounding out the top five. A final yellow for debris in lap eight halted the hard-charging racing action and relined up the field with Koehler out in front. When the green flag flew, Koehler charged out in front again with Sayler passing Steffens to take over second. As the field charged through the laps remaining, Sayler attempted to tuck his car to the inside of leader Koehler as the two raced through turns three and four but Koehler maintained the lead and charged through the checkered flag to win his fourth feature of the season. Sayler followed in second with heat winner Vranak finishing third. Heat winner Mike Kaufmann of Newton and Steffens rounded out the top five. Summary: Peter’s Pantry Night at the Races |
