EWSC and The Legends Reunion Event to Honor Harold “Happy” Laack

Manitowoc, WI.  July 20, 2006 - Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car, of Manitowoc, will be posthumously honoring Harold “Happy” Laack, with a special tribute, at its upcoming Legends Reunion Event and Races on July 29, 2006 at the Manitowoc County Expo. Laack was well known in the Sheboygan and Manitowoc areas for not only his political career and other group participation, but as founding member and promoter of Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car. Additionally, he was the club’s track manager for more than 25 years.

Laack served on the EWSC Board of Directors in various capacities, including Treasurer; and was a strong promoter of EWSC and racing in several local communities. He willingly gave of his expertise and knowledge of racing and the politics of it. It was one of those instrumental in the development of the Manitowoc County Expo Race Track.

There will be a special program honoring Laack during the Legends Reunion Event and again during the races. A special award has been created as the “Happy Laack Award”, for the promotion of EWSC and racing. This year’s first recipient will be Bill Hoftiezer of Sheboygan Falls, WI. Hoftiezer has served as a modified pit steward, on the EWSC Board of Directors, initiated various fundraising and activities and currently is manager of all the food stands at the Manitowoc Expo. Hoftiezer will be receiving his award at intermission during the races by members of the Laack family.

Other Legend honorees and award recipients are the Gierke Family of Racers, Kiel; John Laack, Legends Employee of the Year; Gene Erdman, the Russ Waldron Award; and Merlyn Armstrong, former owner of the 141 Speedway, Francis Creek; and promoter of racing, a Legend’s award.

Armstrong is also a member of the WI Vintage Race Car Club, which will have a car show during the Legends Reunion. The event starts at 1:00 pm. A special taped interview show of all honorees will be held at 1:30 in the Expo pavilion and is open free to the public. Race gates for the EWSC racing program open at 5:00 pm with time trials at 6:00 pm and races to follow. There will be a special show during intermission honoring Laack and all the legends of EWSC/MSC, as well as, a parade of Vintage race cars..
