Ostrowski Wins in Pat Rand Memorial Twin 22 Race of Champions
By Mary Horneck
Manitowoc, WI.; July 8, 2006 - In the first of the Twin 22 Modified A-Mains, Scott Mohs of Plymouth grabbed the early lead and charged ahead of last year’s Pat Rand Memorial winner Tim McMullen also of Plymouth. Mohs held off McMullen until a mechanical problem sent Mohs to the pits on the first caution of the race. McMullen lined up in the front with Steve Bricker of Two Rivers and Paul Pokorski of West Bend right behind him. As the green flag restarted the race, McMullen charged out in front as Pokorski secured second to chase him down but the race would be halted again on lap seven for a spun car. With McMullen again the pace setter, Pokorski and Bricker switched positions in the row behind him and Reedsville’s Chuck Tuschl and Manitowoc’s Kris Hansen took up the next row to restart the race.

Pete Ostrowski (#7) was awarded the overall victory of the Pat Rand Memorial.  Ostrowski would win one of the 22 lap features and finish second in the other.  Paul Pokorski accomplished the same fete, but Ostrowski turned in the faster qualifying lap to win the overall title.
Paul Pokorski (#4) and overall Pat Rand Memorial winner Pete Ostrowski (#7) each captured one of the 22 lap feature events for the Winged Super Modifieds.
Dave Haag (#11) visited victory lane for the first time this season after topping the Limited Late Model main event.
Mike Bastian gave the hometown fans something to cheer about after topping the Grand National Sportsman feature race.
Adam Krepline (#99) topped the Eastern 8 feature contest.
Mark Kuhfuss (#77) had a solid evening winning his heat race and finishing third in the All-American Mighty 4 feature event.

When the green flag flew, Bricker charged into second behind leader McMullen. Pokorski ducked into the inside racing groove to pressure Bricker for the challenge position. Two laps later, fast qualifier Pete Ostrowski of East Troy charged into fifth behind Hansen in fourth. By the halfway point in lap eleven, McMullen was still charging out in front with Pokorski pulling into second and Bricker in third. Ostrowski threw his car to the outside and passed Hansen to take over fourth. Three laps later, Pokorski caught up to McMullen and threw his car to the outside to pull side by side with McMullen down the front stretch. As McMullen and Pokorski battled next to each other for the lead, the two charged through turns one and two. Pokorski passed McMullen on the backstretch to take control of the race and charge out in front. McMullen readjusted and threw his car to the outside as Ostrowski took over third behind the battling duo. Before Pokorski could build his momentum in the lead, an incident in turns one and two sent Butch Hafemann of Campbellsport on his side and collected six other cars sending some at least temporarily to the pit area including McMullen and Ostrowski. On the restart, Pokorski lined up in front alone with Bricker and Tuschl directly behind him. As the green flag flew, only five laps remained in the race as Ostrowski reentered the track but McMullen could not. Ostrowski wasted no time in charging the high side of the track to pull into second behind the hard charging Pokorski in the lead by lap 20. At the checkered, Pokorski won the first leg of the Twin 22 Challenge. Ostrowski followed in second with heat winner Bricker, Tucshl and Billy Hafemann of Waldo rounding out the top five.

The second Twin 22 race lined up with the finish of the first inverted. Brad Swendrowski of Milwaukee charged out into the early lead with Billy Hafemann chasing him down. As the field flew around the Manitowoc track to complete lap five, Ostrowski made a sweeping pass coming out of turn two and down the backstretch as he moved from sixth to third in one lap. At the line in five, Swendrowski held a healthy lead over second place Hafemann and Ostrowski charging in third. Bricker and Hansen followed Ostrowski through the line as McMullen, Pokorski and Tuschl raced three wide down the front stretch and into the corners. Hafemann and Ostrowski both chose the high side of the track to reel in leader Swendrowski. Three laps later, a tight four-way battle for the challenge spot developed with Bricker, Hafemann, Ostrowski and McMullen charging side by side together around the track. Ostrowski readjusted his driving line to tuck his car inside to pressure for the position. By lap ten, Bricker, Hafemann and Ostrowski raced up to Swendrowski as the leader was approaching lapped traffic and the only yellow flag of this race appeared a lap later. Leader Swendrowski and last years winner McMullen, two of the top five cars, would retire to the pits with mechanical problems on the caution. Bricker lined up in front with Hafemann and Ostrowski in the row behind him. As the green flag flew, Ostrowski wasted no time in charging around the high side of the track to take over the lead of the race. Two laps later, Pokorski charged into second to reel in Ostrowski. But Ostrowski was focused on the win as he charged through the corners and down the straightaways. At the checkered flag, fast qualifier Ostrowski won the second leg of the Twin 22 A-Mains. Pokorski followed in second with Hafemann, Tuschl and Dave Deicher of Plymouth rounding out the top five.

With a first and second place each, Ostrowski and Pokorski tied in Twin Main Points for the overall win. With ties being broken by qualifying times, fast qualifier Ostrowski earned the honor of the Pat Rand Memorial trophy. Pokorski followed in the overall finish in second. Hafemann, Tuschl and Lee Mohs of Plymouth rounded out the top five in the combined finish.

Without any cautions, Dave Haag of Glenbeulah charged into the lead in the Limited Late Model A-Main in lap three with five time feature winner Dan Dippel of Plymouth pulling into second behind him. As Dippel charged after the leader, Haag set a steady pace and didn’t give into the pressure. Dippel pulled to within striking distance a couple times to take over the lead but Haag remained focused and charged ahead of Dippel each time. At the checkered flag, Haag again held off Dippel to win his first A-Main of the season.

As the Grand National A-Main charged onto the track, Bernie Schommer of Chilton grabbed the early lead with Brad Ruh of Elkhart Lake in the challenge spot. By lap four, three time feature winner Mike Bastian of Manitowoc charged from seventh in lap one to pull inside Ruh to challenge for second place. A lap later, the only yellow flag appeared pulling Schommer back to the field. Ruh and Bastian lined up behind leader Schommer as the green flag restarted the remaining 15 laps. Schommer maintained his lead as Bastian charged into second and threw his car to the inside to pressure Schommer for control of the race. At the scoring line in lap seven, Schommer and Bastian raced side by side down the front stretch with Schommer in the lead by feet as Jason Winkler of New Holstein moved into third behind them. A lap later, Bastian charged harder and took over the top spot. Bastian began distancing his car out in front with Schommer focused on catching him. Behind third place Winkler, a three way battle developed for fourth with Brett Wenzel of Two Rivers, Jeff Muehlbauer of Elkhart Lake and Brian Gilles of Plymouth racing side by side around the entire track. At the line in twelve, Wenzel and Muehlbauer were only separated by inches as they charged after Bastian, Schommer and Winkler. With five laps to the end, Muehlbauer took over fourth but a lap later, Wenzel battled back and took the position away from Muehlbauer. As the laps clicked off, leader Bastian began charging through lapped traffic to secure his lead. At the checkered flag, Bastian won his fourth A-Main of the season. Schommer followed in second with two-time feature winner Winkler, Wenzel and Muehlbauer rounding out the top five.

In the Mighty 4 A-Main, four-time feature winner Tim Jorgenson of DePere jumped into the early lead with Amber Rabe of Plymouth chasing him down from second. Jason Swoboda of Two Rivers moved into third early with Mark Kuhfuss of Howards Grove on his bumper.

As Jorgenson built a healthy lead over the field by the halfway point in lap seven, Rabe securely held second as Kuhfuss moved into third. A lap later, Nic Schuette of Glenbeulah joined the top five behind Swoboda now in fourth. No cautions slowed the racing action in the 15-lap race as heat winner Jorgenson charged through the checkered flag to win his fifth feature of the season. Rabe followed in second with heat winner Kuhfuss, Swoboda and Schuette rounding out the top five.

On the first lap of the Eastern 8 A-Main, Mike Kaufmann of Newton and Adam Krepline of Manitowoc charged around the track hooked together as three time feature winner Bret Koehler of Two Rivers charged into the lead. Kaufmann and Krepline disconnected and focused on catching Koehler. Krepline secured the challenge spot but Koehler held a healthy lead. After completing lap seven of the 15-lap race, the healthy lead did not help Koehler as he broke and coasted into the infield, handing the lead over to Krepline. As Krepline set the pace, Paul Nelesen of Mishicot pulled into the challenge spot with Marshall Mullenex behind him. Krepline charged around the Manitowoc track to take the checkered flag to win his second A-Main of the season. Nelesen followed in second with Mullenex, heat winner Greg Steffens of Appleton and Mike Schreiber rounded out the top five.
