Manitowoc, WI.; June 10, 2006 - Two time track champion Paul Pokorski of West Bend grabbed the early lead in the Winged Super Modified A-Main with the 2005 champion Tim McMullen of Plymouth chasing him down. Through a couple early yellows, Pokorski and McMullen battled. Racing into turns one and two, McMullen charged next to Pokorski and pulled just ahead of him on the backstretch. Once in the lead, McMullen threw his car to the inside as Pokorski charged around the track on the outside. Two laps later, Pokorski, who was now racing on the extreme outside of the track, shot down the frontstretch and took back the lead by inches at the flagstand just before the final caution of the race appeared for debris. |

On the restart, Pokorski earned the front spot with McMullen and another former track champion Pete Ostrowski of East Troy right behind him. As the green flag flew to restart lap nine, Pokorski changed to the inside groove to hold off the charging McMullen. |

Ostrowski chose the outside groove and began a three way battle for control of the race. Two laps later, the high groove paid off for Ostrowski as he charged out of turn two to pass McMullen by inches for second. McMullen remained hooked up down low on the track and took back second a lap later. Ostrowski charged back very high on the track and at the line retook second over McMullen. For six laps, McMullen and Ostrowski swapped second place until lap fourteen when Ostrowski lost some ground on the backstretch and McMullen charged ahead to reel in leader Pokorski who started lapping cars. McMullen picked his way through the lapped traffic and pulled in directly behind Pokorski in lap twenty with only ten laps to the checkered. Pokorski threw his car down low to ward off McMullen but McMullen remained focused and waited for an opening. Coming out of turn four to complete lap 23 an opportunity presented itself as Pokorski charged out of the turn just a little higher than the inside of the track. The opening was just enough for the low groove charging McMullen to pull next to him. As the battling champions shot across the scoring line, McMullen took back control of the race. McMullen, Pokorski and Ostrowski remained close in the front of the field with lapped traffic interspersed. Ostrowski charged passed Pokorski in lap 25 but Pokorski battled back and charged passed lapped traffic and Ostrowski to regain second spot with just four laps to go. A lap later, Pokorski retired to the pits with a flat tire moving Ostrowski into second again with McMullen charging, the laps counting down and lapped traffic in the way. McMullen flew around the Manitowoc track to win his first A-Main of the season. Fast Qualifier Ostrowski followed in second with Chuck Tuschl of Reedsville, Billy Hafemann of Waldo and Lee Mohs of Waldo rounding out the top five. By lap eleven, Muehlbauer passed Ruh for second as Ruh, Brian Gilles of Plymouth and Winkler charged three abreast around the track to secure third place. Gilles broke free from the battle to take over third a lap later. Leader Bastian distanced his car out in front forcing Muehlbauer and Gilles to charge after him to challenge for the win. Muehlbauer chose the low groove as Gilles charge high on the track to reel in Bastian. Five laps from the end, Muehlbauer and Gilles raced side by side at the line with lapped traffic between them and the lead. As the field finished the white flag lap, Gilles took second place by inches over Muehlbauer at the line. Bastian charged through the corners and took the checkered to win his third A-Main of the 2006 season. Gilles followed in second with Muehlbauer, Winkler and Bob Cullen of Chilton rounding out the top five. When the green flag flew for a green-white-checkered finish, King lined up in front alone with Eickert and two time A-Main winner Bret Koehler of Two Rivers in the next row. As the green flag flew, King held onto the lead with Koehler jumping into second. At the white flag, Koehler threw his car to the outside to challenge for the lead. King and Koehler battled around the track until they charged out of turn four. When it looked as if Koehler would take over the lead and then the win, King maneuvered on the track and took both his car and Koehler’s hard into the front guardrail. Eickert dove to the inside of the track and came through the checkered flag. This win would have been Eickert’s second A-Main but a post race inspection found a violation. Adam Krepline of Manitowoc finished in second with Steffens in third. |
