Manitowoc, WI.; May 27, 2006 - Storms after the Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car race program was completed seemed fitting with the theme of the night, the first annual Halloween in May Night at the Races. With some fans in costumes and race car haulers decorated, “fright” night at the races proved to be popular with fans and drivers alike at the new home of the EWSC Race Club. |

After winning the Modified A-Main the previous night when the division visited the Luxemburg track, Paul Pokorski of West Bend jumped into the lead of the self-starting Winged Super Modified A-Main at the Manitowoc County Expo on the first lap with Milwaukee’s Brad Swendrowski on his tail. An early yellow in lap three kept the field tight together as the green flag flew again. Swendrowski again stuck to the back of leader Pokorski as the 2005 Track Champion Tim McMullen of Plymouth moved into third behind Swendrowski. A lap later, McMullen continued his charge by passing Swendrowski to take over second. Pokorski began distancing his car as McMullen moved into the challenge spot. Just as McMullen started catching the leader, Pokorski experienced mechanical problems and pulled into the infield from the backstretch. After inheriting the lead instantly, McMullen took control and charged through the corners. Just before midway in the 30-lap race as the race was relined for a yellow flag, the racing action was halted again after Steve Bricker of Two Rivers violently rolled his car between turns one and two. On the restart, McMullen lined up in the front alone with Billy Hafemann of Waldo and Swendrowski in the row behind him. After the green flag flew, Manitowoc’s Kris Hansen charged into third behind leader McMullen and Hafemann. Both McMullen and Hafemann chose the high side of the track to lead the race and distance their cars out in front. In laps twenty, just ten laps from the end, Hansen in third had two Plymouth drivers, Bob Brion and Dave Deicher, on his tail. As leader McMullen began lapping cars, Hafemann made multiple attempts to duck to the inside groove to pass for the lead. But McMullen held his line and would not let Hafemann pass. After completing lap 26, Hafemann made a daring pass on the backstretch to take control of the A-Main just four laps from the end. McMullen charged back as both weaved through lapped traffic. At the checkered flag, Hafemann became the third different feature winner in the Modified division this season. McMullen followed in second with Hansen, Brion and Deicher rounding out the top five. In the Limited Late Model division, Sheboygan’s Paul Dingel charged forward to lead early in the A-Main event with Plymouth’s Scott Haugstad on his bumper. The front runners remained together as fast qualifier and track champion Dan Dippel also of Plymouth moved into third to reel in leader Dingel. As Dingel and Haugstad set the pace, Plymouth’s Dave Haag passed Dippel to take over third in lap six. Dippel charged back with Haag holding him off until five laps from the end when Dippel retook third from Haag and chased down Dingel and Haugstad. At the checkered flag, Dingel won his first feature of the 2006 season. Haugstad followed in second with Dippel in third. As the Grand National A-Main hit the track, last week’s feature winner Mike Bastian of Manitowoc wasted no time in charging to the front of the field as he took the lead in lap two. Chilton’s Jesse Cullen raced after leader Bastian from second with Two Rivers’ Brett Wenzel in third. Through a series of unfortunate accidents Bastian, Cullen and Wenzel stayed out in the top three spots with Wenzel passing Cullen for second in lap seven. A lap later, Bob Peter of Howards Grove also passed Cullen to take over third. After lap nine completed, the red flag flew as a multi-car accident caused Gregg Haese of Two Rivers to roll his car on the backstretch. With all the drivers in the accident returned to the pits, leader Bastian lined up in the front of the field with Wenzel and Manitowoc’s Travis Rodewald in the second row and fast qualifier Brian Gilles of Plymouth and Jason Winkler of New Holstein in the next row. As the green flag flew, Rodewald and Gilles both charged passed Wenzel to take over second and third behind leader Bastian. A lap later, just as Gilles took over second from Rodewald, the final caution appeared and one-minute-per-lap time limit was hit which set up a green-white-checkered flag finish for the race. Bastian lined up again out in front this time with Gilles and Wenzel in the next row. The green flag flew for the two lap dash to the checkered. Gilles dove to the inside of the track on both laps to pass Bastian for the win but leader Bastian raced smoothly through the turns and charged through the checkered flag to win his second feature in a row with heat winner Gilles, heat winner Wenzel, Winkler and Chilton’s Bernie Schommer rounding out the top five. |

The two cars battled for the next two laps, when Koehler gained the advantage over Schroeder. Koehler wasted no time in trying to charge out in front alone. By lap 10, Chilton’s Troy Bartel charged after Schroeder in second.
With Schroeder racing the high groove, Bartel threw his car to the inside to pull next to him on the front stretch. Manitowoc’s Adam Krepline and Sheboygan’s Matt McDonald charged behind the battling Schroeder and Bartel and waited for their chance. Through a yellow flag restart a lap later, Koehler once again jumped out to the lead now with Bartel and McDonald behind him. Two laps later, a final yellow flag set up a green-white-checkered dash to the end. Koehler did not let restarts damper his victory hopes as he charged out to the front again with McDonald making a white flag lap pass to take over second. Krepline also made his move on the white flag lap by passing Schroeder to take over fourth behind third place Bartel. At the checkered flag, Koehler won his second feature of the season with McDonald following in second. Krepline also made a final lap pass to finish third with Bartel and heat winner Schroeder rounding out the top five.
