Manitowoc, WI.; May 20, 2006 - Even with “Mother Nature” helping to water the race track ---twice---while all the drivers were in the pits and the fans were in the stands, Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars and the dedicated drivers pulled the track back into shape to run the second race in the 2006 season. Qualifying was cancelled and the progressive format heat races were lined up for the die-hard race fans at the Manitowoc County Expo. |

In a fast and furious self-starting Winged Super Modified A-Main event, multiple track champion holder # 7 Pete Ostrowski of Troy Center charged to the early lead and set the track on fire. The 2005 EWSC Modified Track Champion # 98 Tim McMullen of Plymouth moved in behind Ostrowski from lap two to hunt him down. A lap later, it really was a battle of champions as two time division champion # 4 Paul Pokorski of West Bend moved into third behind the Ostrowski / McMullen duo. As the top three approached slower lapped traffic early in the race, the seasoned drivers charged through the traffic without incident. By lap seven, Ostrowski flew smoothly around the turns with Pokorski passing McMullen for second. Both Pokorski and McMullen threw their cars to the high side of the track to take advantage of the bite on the outside. For laps, the three champions weaved their way inside and outside smoothly until lap thirteen when failed brakes were the cause of # 10 Chad Kistner of New Holstein rolling his car in turns one and two. With no where to go, third place McMullens car threatened to roll but came to rest against Kistners. Even though both drivers were able to climb out of their cars, the accident caused both to retire to the pit area for the rest of the race. On the restart, Ostrowski again motored out to the front with Pokorski on his bumper. Waldo’s # 2 Billy Hafemann jumped into third to chase the lead. Ostrowski and Pokorski again began weaving from the inside groove to the outside and back. By lap twenty, Ostrowski was again sending lapped traffic back to the challengers but Pokorski and Hafemann could handle the traffic and charged around the other cars still with their sights on Ostrowski. A final yellow in lap 20 would hit the time limit restarting the race with a two lap dash to the checkered flag. At the green, Ostrowski would not give up the lead and charged out to the front with Pokorski and Hafemann still racing after him. Manitowoc’s # 8 Kris Hansen moved into fourth behind Hafemann and joined the final charge. At the checkered flag, heat winner Ostrowski charged through smoothly to take his first feature win of the 2006 season. Last week’s feature winner Pokorski followed in second with Hafemann, Hansen and heat winner # 33 Steve Bricker of Cato rounding out the top five. In the Limited Late Model A-Main, Sheboygan’s # 5 Terry Goetsch jumped into the early lead with another Sheboygan driver # 21 Paul Dingel charging after him. Dingel maneuvered a front stretch pass to take over the lead in lap three. Goetsch stuck to Dingel to re-challenge for the lead with Plymouth’s # 38 Scott Haugstad chasing him down. Three laps later, last week’s feature winner # 8 Dan Dippel also of Plymouth passed Haugstad to take over third and chase down Dingel and Goetsch. A lap later, Dippel took over second and began the chase for the lead. Dingel held off Dippel for a couple laps but Dippel charged on the backstretch and passed for the lead in lap nine. As Dippel secured the lead, Goetsch, Haugstad and # 11 Dave Haag of Plymouth began a three-way battle for third place. The three Limited Late Models charged around the track three wide. A couple laps later, Goetsch threw his car to the inside groove as Haugstad used the outside of the track. With only two laps to the end, Haugstad charged through turns three and four to pass Goetsch to claim third place. At the checkered, Dippel won his second A-Main race in 2006. Dingel followed in second with Haugstad, heat winner Goetsch and Haag rounding out the top five. A full field of Grand National cars provided a great A-Main race for the fans as # 6 Josh McDonald of Sheboygan jumped into the early lead through the first of only two yellow flags after lap one was completed. McDonald relined up out in front alone and charged through the green flag to hold onto the lead with Two Rivers’ # 4 Brett Wenzel on his bumper. Two laps later, Wenzel charged up next to leader McDonald and only inches separated the two cars at the scoring line with Wenzel having the slight advantage in lap four. A lap later, previous track champion # 7 Brian Gilles of Plymouth joined Wenzel and McDonald in a three way battle for the lead. Bastian claimed the lead again in lap five by only a bumper over Wenzel and Gilles. Bastian and Wenzel chose the outside groove to charge around the track with Gilles throwing his car to the inside in third place. When the final yellow flag halted the racing action in lap six, Bastian lined up in the front by himself with Wenzel and Gilles in the row behind him. When the green flag flew, Bastian charged out into the lead again and Gilles stayed to the outside and passed into second. Bastian was smooth and soon was distancing his car out in front of the field. Gilles charged after him with Wenzel, # 88 Jason Winkler of New Holstein and # 12 Brian Goetsch of Sheboygan in the top five by lap ten. Two laps later, # 35 Ben Schmidt of Plymouth moved up to sixth and began his charge to enter the top five. Another couple laps later, Schmidt passed Goetsch for fifth and set his sights on Winkler. As the laps clicked off and Bastian kept a solid lead with hard charging Gilles on his bumper, Schmidt passed once more to take fourth from Winkler on the white flag lap. At the checkered, Bastian won his first Grand National feature with heat winner Gilles, Wenzel, Schmidt and heat winner Winkler rounding out the top five. In the ending tally, Schmidt charged passed 12 cars to finish fourth. |

With only one yellow flag to halt the racing action, the Eastern 8 A-Main charged through the track with # 41 Ryan Eickert of Brillion grabbing the early lead. By lap three, Eickert was fending off # 15 Mike Robinson of Denmark. When the accident occurred in lap five, Eickert lined up in front alone with Robinson and # 2 Troy Bartel of Chilton in the row behind him. At the green flag, Eickert held onto his lead with Bartel moving into second. Eickert was determined to win and kept his car safely out in front. With the whole field running against curfew, the drivers charged around the track and at the checkered flag, Eickert raced through to win his first feature event in 2006. Bartel followed in second with Robinson, # 74 Hank Horn and # 99 Adam Krepeline of Manitowoc rounding out the top five. In the visiting Rascal Outlaw division, rookie driver # 30 Jason Mahoney of Lake Zurich, Illinois grabbed the early lead with # 33 Jim Thiel of McHenry, Illinois on his bumper. Two laps later, # 88 Jim Vugler charged into pass Thiel for second and set his sights on leader Mahoney. In lap five, Vugler flew passed Mahoney and secured the lead of the race. With the leader Vugler turning 18 second laps on the Manitowoc County Expo grounds, the win looked secure but a sole yellow flag in lap ten would pull the field back together for the moment. At the green, Vugler was determined to win and charged out in front again this time with the Most Improved Driver of 2005 # 8 John LeSage of Elgin, Illinois in second. At the checkered, Vugler smoothly won the first Rascal Outlaw feature with Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars. LeSage followed in second with Mahoney, Thiel and # 42 Mark Findley of Ingleside, Illinois rounding out the top five. |
