By Mary Horneck
Manitowoc, WI.; May 6, 2006 - In the self-starting Winged Super Modified A-Main, past track champion # 4 Paul Pokorski of West Bend was hooked up and fast from the drop of the green flag. Only one yellow flag after the first lap would slow down the racing action in the 25-lap main event. By the third lap, the 2005 Modified Champion # 98 Tim McMullen of Plymouth charged in behind Pokorski to take over second place.

Paul Pokorski (#4) collected top honors in the season opening main event for the Winged Super Modifieds at the Manitowoc County Expo Fairgrounds.
Dan Dippel is no stranger to vicdtory lane in the Limited Late Model division, and he added another checkered flag to his collection after the feature race.
Brad Ruh (#84) was out front at the checkered flag in the Grand National Sportsman feature race.
Brett Koehler (#65) collected the victory in the Eastern Eight feature contest.
Tim Jorgenson (#11) took a sweep of the All-American Mighty 4's.

At the half-way point of the race, lapped traffic looked to slow down the leader but Pokorski remained focused and smoothly lapped the cars. McMullen chased after Pokorski as Waldo’s # 2 Billy Hafemann and # 7 Pete Ostrowski of East Troy battled in third and fourth. Heat winner Pokorski charged through the checkered flag to take home the first Modified A-Main win in the 2006 season. McMullen followed in second with fast qualifier Hafemann and Ostrowski rounding out the top four. The Bubba’s Place Hard Charger went to Ostrowski for passing 7cars.

Plymouth’s # 8 Dan Dippel, the 2004 and 2005 Limited Late Model Track Champion, took the top spot in the division’s A-Main from the first lap and never looked back. First the # 21 Dingel Brothers car challenged Dippel for control of the race and then in lap nine, another Plymouth driver # 38 Scott Haugstad moved into second place to chase Dippel for the lead. In the final laps of the 20-lap race, Dippel charged through lapped traffic to win the first Limited Late Model A-Main in the season. Haugstad followed in second with # 11 Dave Haag passing in the last lap to take third place.

Running for the first time with EWSC, the Grand National A-Main hit the track in a roll of thunder as a full field of competitors vied to be the first main event winner in Club history. Returning driver # 08 Jeff Muehlbauer of Elkhart Lake jumped to the early lead and battled through two restarts to maintain control of the race. Running second from lap one, # 27 Travis Rodewald of Manitowoc challenged leader Muehlbauer for the top spot. Coming across the line in lap four, Muehlbauer and Rodewald raced side-by-side with only a bumper giving Rodewald the slight advantage. Muehlbauer charged back and regained the lead with # 7 Brian Gilles of Plymouth moving into second place in lap five. Another Elkhart Lake driver # 84 Brad Ruh took over third place and challenged Gilles for second.

As Muehlbauer and Gilles battled for control of the race, Ruh maneuvered around both cars to take the lead in lap eight. Gilles moved back into the challenge spot and now chased Ruh for the lead. A late lap accident restarted the race with a green-white-checkered flag finish setting up a 2 lap dash to the checkered flag. Ruh lined up in the front alone with Gilles and Chilton’s # 8 Bob Cullen on his bumper. When the green flag started the race again, Ruh charged forward and never looked back. Ruh took the checkered to become the first Grand National A-Main winner in EWSC history. Fast Qualifier Gilles followed in second with Cullen following in third. The Bubba’s Place Hard Charger went to # 93 Dan Schumacher of Milwaukee for passing 11 cars to finish fourth.

In the Mighty 4 division, returning driver # 98 Steven Brion of Sheboygan grabbed the early lead with # 18 Tim Jorgenson of DePere on his bumper. Jorgenson charged forward and took over the lead as # 40 Phil Martzahl of Freedom maneuvered into second. By the mid-point of the race, # 11 DJ Jorgenson also of DePere moved into third to chase down second place Martzahl. Heat winner Tim Jorgenson charged through lapped traffic and took the checkered flag to be the first Mighty 4 A-Main winner in 2006. In a white flag lap pass, DJ Jorgenson moved into finish second and at the checkered, # 27 Jeff Gierke of Kiel passed to finish third. The Bubba’s Place Hard Charger went to Tim Jorgenson for passing seven cars.

Returning to the EWSC lineup for the second year, the Eastern 8 division A-Main featured a lot of racing action for the fans. Manitowoc’s # 4 Paul Nelesen grabbed the early lead but Brillion’s # 41 Ryan Eickert charged into second in lap two and took over the lead in lap three. Nelesen raced after Eickert to regain the lead while # 65 Brett Koehler of Two Rivers applied pressure for second. Just before an accident in lap seven halted the racing action, Koehler passed Nelesen for second place. When the green flag flew to restart the race, Eickert charged forward to secure the lead again. Koehler held onto second with # 2 Troy Bartel passing into third. Four laps later, Eickert was forced to the pit area with a flat tire. Koehler wasted no time in securing the lead and charging out in front of the field. At the checkered flag, Koehler became the first Eastern 8 A-Main winner in the 2006 season. Bartel followed in second with Sheboygan’s # 6 Matt McDonald securing third.
